Former President Donald J. Trump has been convicted by a Manhattan jury for falsifying business records linked to the Stormy Daniels hush money scandal, marking him as the first U.S. president in history to be found guilty of a felony. He was found guilty on all 34 counts.
Trump now faces up to 4 years in prison. The former president, who had been staring straight ahead as the guilty verdict was read on each count, turned to look toward the jury box as each juror confirmed their verdict. He returned to looking straight ahead, maintaining a straight face, as Judge Juan Merchan thanked the jurors. The judge set the sentencing date for July 11.
“It was a rigged trial, it was a disgrace,” Trump said outside the courtroom on Thursday. “The real verdict is going to be November 5th by the people.”
“We didn't do a thing wrong. I am a very innocent man,” he continued. “We have a country that is in big trouble.”
In the high-stakes courtroom drama in Manhattan, Trump faced a barrage of charges from District Attorney Alvin Bragg, pleading not guilty to 34 counts of first-degree falsification of business records. The charges centered around the alleged scheme to hide a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to prevent her from disclosing a supposed 2006 affair with Trump before the 2016 election.
As the clock ticked down in the courtroom, Judge Merchan prepared to dismiss the jurors for the day. However, at approximately 4:20 p.m., plans changed with the arrival of a note from the jury, delaying their dismissal until the verdict could be heard according to Fox News.
According to Judge Merchan who announced the message aloud in the courtroom, the jury declared, “We have a verdict. We would like an extra 30 minutes to fill out the forms if that’d be possible.” The note emerged after jurors deliberated for less than 10 hours over the span of two days.

“Please let there be no outbursts, no reactions of any kind when we take the verdict,” said Merchan.
The prosecution's case hinged on proving Trump's intent to disguise the payment to Daniels, which his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, claimed to have orchestrated using a home equity line of credit to keep it secret from his own wife. Cohen, labeled the prosecution’s “star witness,” asserted that Trump had directed him to “handle it” to avoid a potential scandal erupting before the election. However, Trump's defense team vehemently denied any directives were given to Cohen regarding the payment.
Before the verdict was announced, the mood at the Trump table shifted dramatically, with previously smiling faces turning sour. According to NBC, the former president, sporting a stern expression, sat with his arms crossed in front of his chest, signaling a marked change in the atmosphere. Amid the tension, Trump and Blanche exchanged whispers, though their interactions brief. Meanwhile, his attorneys sat in near silence, barely exchanging words.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee is also embroiled in three other pending criminal cases.
