Just months after receiving a clean bill of health from a mammogram, “Dance Moms” star Kelly Hyland was hit with a shocking diagnosis. The alarm first sounded for Hyland, not through medical tests, but through an unexpected series of compliments about her appearance, which led her to sense that something was amiss. The Hyland family is now rallying together, confident in Hyland's resilience and fighting spirit.

Speaking alongside her children, the reality TV mom shared her unwavering determination to beat her breast cancer diagnosis. “The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” the 'Dance Moms' alum said in an exclusive interview with E! News, “I lost enough that others noticed and would ask for my dieting hacks, but there was nothing I had changed in my day-to-day to cause the loss.”

After undergoing a biopsy, Hyland's deepest fears were realized with a grim diagnosis: “It was malignant.” More extensive testing delivered even more daunting news. She was diagnosed with invasive carcinoma stage 1, grade 3, indicating that her breast cancer was highly aggressive.

Recounting the swift progression, she said, “I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months.” Shocked by the rapid growth, Hyland admitted, “I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.”

Hyland is best known for her role on the reality TV show 'Dance Moms,' which follows the intense and often dramatic world of competitive dance. Hyland, a former dancer herself, appeared on the show with her two daughters, Brooke and Paige. The series showcased the dynamics between the dancers' parents, the children, and the dance coach Abby Lee Miller. Hyland's time on the show was marked by her fiery personality and several conflicts with Miller, culminating in a notable altercation that led to legal action. The incident and her strong advocacy for her daughters made her a standout figure among the “Dance Moms” cast.

Hyland is now utilizing the Amma scalp cooling system in her chemotherapy treatments to minimize hair loss. The cap functions by “cooling the scalp to a low temperature so that the blood vessels contract, reducing the blood flow to the hair follicles,” she explained. “This limits the amount of chemo drugs to the hair follicles.”

Hyland is in the midst of her chemotherapy regimen, currently undergoing the second of six initial treatments. This will be followed by surgery, radiation, and an additional 11 treatments. “I have a long journey ahead,” she acknowledged. Her family is committed to supporting her every step of the way as each family member takes turns being her hand-holder during the treatments. “They are very long appointments, so I don't want to put that responsibility on just one person.”

“My children get me through the hard moments,” Hyland said. “I keep telling myself that I need to be strong for them. I want to get healthy and onto the other side of this, so I can be there with my kids on their wedding days, to hold their children, and for every next step in their lives.”
