U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) dismissed concerns over the southern border while urging his colleagues to vote in support of a $60 billion foreign aid bill for Ukraine, instead stating that the border between Russia and Ukraine is “our border.”

“Some say, well, we have to deal with our border first. The Ukrainian-Russian border is our border! It’s the border between depraved autocracy and freedom-loving people seeking our democratic way of life,” Connolly declared. “Do we have a stake in that outcome? Yes. Undeniably yes. Will we rise to the occasion? Will we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, who for 1,151 days have been holding off the depraved, thuggish dictator Vladimir Putin, who has respected no norms of warfare?”

The House ultimately voted to pass the $60 billion aid package for Ukraine before soon passing a $20 billion package for Israel. Lawmakers could be heard cheering as they waved Ukrainian flags on the floor of the House shortly after the adoption of the measure.

The Ukraine aid package passed by a vote of 310 to 112, with 100 Republicans voting “yes” and 112 voting “no.” Every single House Democrat voted in favor of the legislation.

Conservatives are furious with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who for months refused to vote on foreign aid bills without action on the southern border. The Senate did float an amnesty bill disguised as “border security” legislation, though Johnson declared it “dead on arrival” in the House, leading to its defeat in the Senate.

After the amnesty bill’s defeat, President Biden and House Democrats refused to negotiate further, claiming that the bill that would have authorized 10,000 illegal aliens a day while providing them with funds to settle their asylum claims faster was a “border security” bill. They then refused to negotiate further.

As a result, Speaker Johnson passed the foreign aid bill without any action on border security.

“Ukrainian flags fly in the chamber of the UNITED STATES House of Representatives as they vote to send more of your hard-earned money to a corrupt foreign regime,” Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) wrote in an X post on Saturday. “And just like that they shout ‘UKRAINE! UKRAINE!’ while happily working to secure Ukraine’s borders, not ours.”

“For the Swamp, it’s Ukraine First and America Last,” said U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC). “Gleefully waving Ukrainian flags as the American people suffer under Biden’s border invasion. In case it wasn’t obvious, I voted NO.”

A number of House Republicans have moved to oust Johnson in response to the vote.
