Hunter Biden, accompanied by his wife Melissa and attorney Abbe Lowell, appeared in Delaware for the third day of his federal gun crime trial on Wednesday. Facing up to 25 years if convicted of all charges, the proceedings took a personal turn when his ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, testified. Buhle recounted finding a crack pipe in their D.C. home back in 2015, revealing her discovery of Biden's drug use during their marriage.

During her testimony, Kathleen Buhle recounted a troubling conversation with Hunter Biden about his drug use. “She asked him about the pipe, to which he said he 'acknowledged smoking crack,'” she testified. Buhle had grown suspicious even before discovering the crack pipe, suspecting drug use was behind his Navy discharge.

Buhle suspected Hunter was “kicked out of the Navy for testing positive for cocaine,” she explained. Reflecting on that period, Buhle said she felt “worried” and “scared” for him according to Fox News.

She vividly described the tumultuous years with Hunter, recalling how she felt deep concern for him during his struggles with substance abuse. She painted a picture of a man transformed by addiction, noting, “When Hunter was using, he was not himself and angry, short-tempered, and acting in ways he didn’t when he was sober.” Buhle further revealed the depth of the issue, stating he was “smoking crack the day after our anniversary.”

The evidence, she recounted, was hard to ignore. Buhle discovered a “broken pipe,” “white powder,” and “white crystals” in his car. From 2015 to 2019, she diligently searched his car for drugs before letting her daughters use it, because “she wanted to make sure they weren’t driving with drugs.”

When prosecutor Leo Wise inquired if she was specifically checking for drugs in 2018, her answer was a firm “yes.” Wise also probed whether Hunter kept his drug use a secret from family and friends, to which Buhle affirmed, “Yes.”

Their marriage lasted from 1993 to 2017, and Buhle has been open about Biden's battles with drug addiction and his numerous affairs, including with his sister-in-law and Beau Biden’s widow, Hallie Biden, who is also a key witness in the case. In 2022, Buhle published a memoir titled “If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing,” where she shared her personal experiences dealing with her marriage, including the challenges of Hunter's substance abuse and their eventual separation.

Hunter Biden's trial commenced with opening statements on Tuesday, shortly after a juror was excused for transportation issues. Hunter faces serious accusations as he's charged with illegal gun purchase and possession during a period of drug abuse or addiction, which contravenes federal law. Despite pleading not guilty to the three charges, he has previously acknowledged his battles with alcohol and crack cocaine. The case has been spearheaded by special counsel David Weiss.

During its opening remarks, the defense aimed to cast doubt on the prosecution's assertion that Hunter deliberately misled gun dealers about his eligibility to purchase a firearm. They argued that he had little interest in owning a gun. The trial marks an unprecedented moment in American history, as it is the first time a sitting president's child has faced trial. The outcome could have significant ramifications for Joe Biden's reelection bid for 2024.
