In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, Representative Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ) has publicly disclosed his recent cancer diagnosis. The announcement came after what began as a persistent cough, initially diagnosed as pneumonia, led to further medical investigation revealing a more serious underlying condition.

“After further testing and imaging, my physician discovered that I have cancer,” said Grijalva in a statement.  “This diagnosis has been difficult to process, but I am confident in the vigorous course of treatment that my medical team has developed, and I’ve begun my journey to fight this cancer,” said Grijalva.

Grijalva has established himself as a prominent left-wing figure in Congress, serving as co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus from 2009 to 2019. During the 2016 Democratic presidential primary, he backed Bernie Sanders, the Senator from Vermont, and in the 2020 primary, he supported Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

“My congressional office remains open and the many services we provide for our constituents continue uninterrupted,” Grijalva continued. “I am in regular communication with my staff and I continue to work as I undergo treatment. It is a privilege to serve as a Representative for the people of Arizona and I take this responsibility very seriously.”

He concluded, “I am grateful to my family, friends and doctors for their support, and I am working hard to get healthy and return to business as usual as soon as I am able. I appreciate your consideration, well wishes and respect for my family’s privacy during this time. My heart goes out to others struggling with cancer, and I wish everyone strength in their fight.”

At 76, the question of whether Grijalva will temporarily leave his congressional role in Washington, D.C., remains open. Such a decision would bar him from voting on legislation, following the 2023 elimination of proxy voting by Republicans. Grijalva's absence could significantly impact the Republican majority's capacity to pass bills, given their narrow lead.

Grijalva has served as the Representative for Arizona's 3rd congressional district since 2003. The district covers much of the western portion of the state, including parts of Tucson. Grijalva has been a member of several congressional committees and is known for his advocacy on environmental issues, education, and healthcare.

He is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has been involved in efforts to reform immigration policies. Grijalva's work in Congress has emphasized social justice, environmental protection, and the rights of Indigenous peoples and minority communities.
