Missouri State Rep. Ben Baker (R-MO) has confirmed the tragic deaths of two American Christian missionaries, including his daughter Natalie, in a gang-related attack in Haiti. According to Missions In Haiti, Inc., Davy and Natalie Lloyd, who were full-time missionaries, were fatally shot at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Baker shared the devastating news on his Facebook page.

Natalie Lloyd, the daughter of Missouri State Representative Baker, and her husband Davy were attending a youth group gathering at their church on Thursday night when the attack occurred. The couple had dedicated their lives to serving the Haitian community through Missions In Haiti, Inc., a nonprofit Christian ministry founded by Davy’s parents, David and Alicia Lloyd, in 2000. Natalie joined the mission with her husband after their marriage in June 2022.

According to reports, the ambush involved three trucks filled with armed gang members who stormed the church. Davy was forcibly taken to their house, where he was tied up and beaten, while the gang looted their property. In the chaos, another gang arrived, purportedly to investigate the commotion. The intervention, however, only intensified the violence, leading to a full-scale assault.

During the attack, Davy, Natalie, and another individual named Jude attempted to communicate with the outside world using Starlink satellite internet. Tragically, their efforts to seek help were cut short as the gang members began shooting at the house. Hours later, it was confirmed that all three had been killed according to NBC News.

Rep. Baker expressed his heartache in a Facebook post, writing, “My heart is broken in a thousand pieces. I’ve never felt this kind of pain. They went to Heaven together. Please pray for my family, we desperately need strength. And please pray for the Lloyd family as well,” Baker wrote. Former President Donald Trump also commented on the tragedy via his social media platform, Truth Social. “God bless Davy and Natalie,” Trump wrote. “Such a tragedy. Haiti is totally out of control. Find the killers NOW!!!”

The tragedy is part of the rampant gang violence that has gripped Haiti, particularly in its capital, Port-au-Prince. Gangs have gained control over significant portions of the city, leading to widespread fear and instability. Since February, coordinated gang attacks have targeted police stations, the main international airport, and the country's largest prisons, exacerbating the already dire security situation. The violence has forced the U.S. government to issue urgent warnings, advising its citizens to leave Haiti as soon as possible according to Fox News.

The humanitarian crisis in Haiti is further compounded by severe poverty, natural disasters, and political corruption. The United Nations World Food Program has reported that at least 1.4 million Haitians are on the verge of famine. Amidst this turmoil, the U.S. has committed to contributing $300 million to a multinational force aimed at restoring law and order in Haiti. This force will include 1,000 police officers from Kenya, who have been deployed to reestablish stability.

“This is a crisis that will be dealt with,” President Joe Biden said on Thursday. “We think we can deal with this.”
