Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is reporting that a mysterious man in a grey suit approached local police officers and asked them to send photos of would-be Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks’ body to a cellphone number. It was later determined that the number belonged to an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agent.
During an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Johnson told host Maria Bartiromo that his staff immediately started reaching out to local law enforcement in the aftermath of the attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Johnson first reported that the Secret Service did not attend a 9 a.m. security meeting last Saturday in which security plans for the event were to be discussed. “[The Secret Service] pretty well put in charge the Butler County law enforcement to coordinate things. Law enforcement wasn’t even on the same channel,” Johnson said.

Butler town manager Tom Knights reported that a local law enforcement officer radioed in the shooter’s location after peering over the building and encountering Crooks with a rifle. He was forced to retreat when the gunman pointed his weapon at the officer. “Once the suspicious individual was identified as being in the vicinity of the AGR building, our police, who were primarily assigned to traffic duty and traffic control, did in fact, because of proximity, move towards that building to try to find and identify,” Knights told NBC News.
It appears as though the officer’s warning never made it to the Secret Service, as they were not synced up on the same radio channels. “There has, to the best of my knowledge, not been any direct communication with members of the Secret Service to our officials,” Knights said. “There are ongoing interviews with all law enforcement that were at the event, regardless of what their roles were.”
Johnson expanded upon the reports on Sunday.
“Secret Service had been there for site visits, weren’t even there. It kind of turned over some of the outer perimeter stuff to local law enforcement. They weren’t even on the same security channel. So the sniper and SWAT teams weren’t on the same channel as the patrol officers, and they weren’t on the same channel as Secret Service,” Johnson said.
Towards the end of the interview, Johnson revealed that a mysterious man approached local law enforcement after Crooks had been neutralized by a Secret Service counter sniper.
“So that sniper team that was in the AGR building, they’re the first ones that went up on the roof. They were the first to encounter the dead assassin at that point in time. Later on, other people joined them, and somebody told them to send the pictures they had taken to an ATF agent, which I think is very strange,” Johnson told Bartiromo.
“And we called up that ATF agent, that individual said that he was with ATF, and now he’s gone dark. We’ve also reached out to the Secret Service agents in charge on the ground. All we’re getting there is a runaround.”
Instead of sharing information, federal investigators have directed the senator and his staff to go through a congressional liaison. “I wish I could rely and have faith in the FBI and the Secret Service to do a truthful accounting of this, but that’s not been my experience with the Russian collusion hoax and for years, dealing with federal law enforcement. We need completely separate and independent investigations, and it has to start now,” Johnson said.
“So this is the guy in the suit who walks up the ladder, goes to the roof and tells the locals, send those pictures to this cell phone. Who was that person?” Bartiromo followed up.
“Well, again, I’m not sure that was the guy,” Johnson answered. “I think another county law enforcement gave the number to the other county law enforcement, the snipers, to send the text. Some guy in a suit walks up the ladder. They believed he was Secret Service, I’m not sure who they gave credentials.”
He then reiterated calls for a thorough and independent investigation of the assassination attempt to begin immediately.
