Longtime PGA golfer Grayson Murray, 30, died suddenly on Saturday after withdrawing from this weekend’s tournament.

Murray withdrew from the Charles Schwab Classic after playing 16 holes in the second round, citing an illness, the tour announced. Murray had gotten off to a decent start in the tournament on Thursday when he shot two under 68.

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan wrote in a statement. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Murray added that he reached out to Murray’s family to offer condolences, adding that the tour has provided grief counselors. The tour also offered to stop play in honor of Grayson’s memory on Saturday, though his family respectfully declined, saying Murray would want the tournament to go on.

“They asked that we continue with tournament play,” Monahan said. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

A two-time PGA tour winner, Murray was enjoying an excellent season after picking up a win in this year’s Sony Open. The North Carolina native defeated multi-time PGA tour winner and major champion Keegan Bradley and An Byeong-hun in a playoff to secure the win. It was his first win since 2017, when he won the Barbasol Championship.

He was the 58th-ranked player in the world at the time of his death.

Murray had battled anxiety and depression earlier in his life and also sought treatment for alcohol abuse. While speaking with NBC Sports back in January, he stated that he had been sober for several months.

A cause of death has not been disclosed as of this time.
