Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) was at fault for a car accident that briefly hospitalized him, his wife and another driver, authorities said.

Fetterman and his wife Gisele were involved in a car accident Sunday morning in Maryland, in the area of westbound Interstate 70 at Interstate 68, located between Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

According to a six-page report from the Maryland State Police, a Chevrolet Traverse was traveling “at a high rate of speed, well over the posted speed limit” before rear ending a Chevrolet Impala around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday. The freshman senator was behind the wheel of the traverse and struck the rear of the Impala, a Maryland State Police spokesman told USA Today.

Both vehicles sustained damage and had to be towed from the scene.

“This was an unfortunate accident and I'm relieved and grateful that there were no serious injuries. I need to do better and do it slower – and I will,” Fetterman, 54, said in a statement after the incident.

Fetterman, 54, released a video shortly after the incident in which he thanked supporters for well wishes and said both he and Gisele were recovering without issue. The couple was celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary at the time of the crash.

“You might have heard G and I were in a car accident yesterday. Thank you all for the well wishes. Not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary but we’re doing well and happy to be back home in Braddock with the family,” Fetterman wrote in an X post.

Neither Fetterman or the other driver were tested for drug or alcohol use after the crash, police said.

All three people from each car were transported to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia for treatment for minor injuries. Fetterman was treated for a bruised shoulder and discharged later Sunday afternoon.

No citations were issued for the crash, which is still under investigation.
