On Sunday morning, U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) and his wife Gisele were involved in a collision on Interstate 70 in Maryland. The accident occurred just before 8 a.m. near the intersection with Interstate 68, prompting a response from troopers at the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack.

Sen. Fetterman, 54, was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Traverse traveling west when his vehicle collided with the rear of a Chevrolet Impala. Both vehicles were headed west on I-70 at the time of the mishap. According to Maryland State Police, preliminary investigations suggest the crash resulted from the Traverse striking the Impala from behind.

A spokesperson for Fetterman's office told KDKA-TV on Monday: “On Sunday morning, John and Gisele were involved in a car accident with another driver. Out of an abundance of caution, they were evaluated at a local hospital. John was treated for a bruised shoulder and they were discharged that afternoon. They are doing well and happy to be back in Braddock.”

The investigation into the crash is still active, and no citations have been issued. Following the incident, a passenger from the Traverse and the driver of the Impala required medical attention. They were transported by ambulance to War Memorial Hospital in West Virginia for treatment of their injuries.

Fetterman has had several publicized health issues in the past. Notably, he suffered a stroke in May 2022, just days before the Pennsylvania Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. The stroke was caused by atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat that is known to increase the risk of stroke. His recovery included a pacemaker and defibrillator implantation to manage his heart's rhythm and prevent future strokes.

Additionally, Fetterman has discussed his struggles with depression, particularly following his stroke. In early 2023, he sought treatment for clinical depression, which he indicated had become severe. His openness about his mental health has been part of a broader conversation about the importance of mental health awareness and treatment, especially in high-pressure roles.

During a recent appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Fetterman was questioned by Maher about whether his policy shifts were influenced by his recovery from his 2022 stroke. Maher asked if his near-death experience had granted him a new sense of “freedom.”

“Absolutely. There's a line from the first ‘Batman,' Joker's like ‘I’ve been dead once already. It's very liberating,'” Fetterman said. “It's freeing in a way. And I just think after beating all of that, I just really [want to] be able to say the things that I have to really believe in and not be afraid of if there's any kind of blowback.”

“I didn't leave the label, it left me on that,” Fetterman later continued when asked about party lines. “After what happened on October 7, I really knew that whole progressive stack would be blasted apart and there would not be any kind of way how the Democrats are going to be able to reply to that kind of response.”

“I really decided early on that I believe that was gonna be the right side with Israel throughout all of that…. Democrats would continue to peel away and kind of walk away from standing with Israel on that.”
