Princess Kate Middleton will tragically be absent from a premier ceremonial event at Kensington Palace later this year, E-News has learned.

Middleton, who continues to wage a private batter with cancer, will not be attending the Colonel's Review ahead of the Trooping the Colour Ceremony on June 8th, according to a statement by the Palace. “This year General James Bucknall K.C.B., C.V.O will carry out the role of Inspecting Officer,” a Kensington Palace spokesperson told NBC News May 30. “On behalf of HRH The Princess of Wales at Colonel's Review as she continues her recovery.”

The annual tradition, marked on June 8th and the 15th, honors the Sovereign's birthday with performances from hundreds of musicians and approximately 1,400 soldiers, the outlet added. Middleton, 42, was last year named the Colonel of the Irish Guards and would have taken a more prominent role in the ceremony. Instead, she and her family — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 with Prince William — will watch from the sidelines.

Since stepping back from her official duties in January, Middleton has been the subject of public fascination and sympathy surrounding an unknown type of cancer diagnosis she dealt with privately until her absence became all but impossible to ignore. Attempts to settle speculation through the release of a doctored family photograph and a subsequent video statement may have provided that she is alive and lucid, but the fervor among Royal Family adherents has yet to subside.

“The princess is not expected to return to work,” a rep for the princess told BBC May 21, “until it's cleared by her medical team.”

In her March 22nd video, Middleton told well-wishers, “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months. We hope that you'll understand that as a family we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”

King Charles, who faced a nearly identically-timed cancer diagnosis of his own, has since returned to official duties. In that time, a minor figure in the Royal Family also learned that her former lover passed away at a tragically young age, adding to the turbulent times for its members.

Middleton and her husband have been seen out occasionally, as when they visited a farm shop in Winsor in March, or issued public statements to allay fears that her prognosis has grown grimmer. Earlier this month the couple announced a recognition of Mental Health Week through the subsidizing of a mental health line for rural farmers. During an impromptu walkabout of James’ Place Newcastle in northeast England, one attendee asked Prince William for an update.

“Do you mind if I ask how your wife and children are?” one fan asks in an Instagram video posted by the WalesVideo account. “We’re all doing well, thank you,” the royal replied. “And obviously, Catherine?” the well-wisher continued.

“We’re all doing well,” Prince William said.
