Don’t call it an insurrection.

Far-left protestors stormed the Capitol building on Tuesday, banging on doors and forcing lawmakers to barricade themselves inside their offices while the mob expressed its anger over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivering a speech before a joint session of Congress. The Jewish leader has been denounced globally for atrocities committed during the nation’s war against Hamas in response to the horrific October 7, 2023 attack, including by many Democratic members of the U.S. House and Senate who are boycotting his visit. The liberal vitriol was even more pronounced among rioters.

Fox News reported that approximately 200 anti-Israel protestors gathered in the Cannon building’s Rotunda hall, chanting pro-Palestinian slogans as police officers worked to apprehend many participants. Video of the rally shows most protestors clad in matching red shirts with corresponding slogans including “Jews Say Stop Arming Israel,” “Stop Arming Israel,” and “Not in Our Name.”

A source within the office of Democratic Congressman Dan Kildee (D-MI) said the Michigan lawmaker and his staff and interns locked the doors to their offices and barricaded entryways after protestors began “violently beating on all three of the doors.”

“Hundreds of protesters outside the office became disruptive, violently beating on the office doors, shouting loudly, and attempting to force entry into the office,” Kildee’s chief of staff told Fox in a statement. “U.S. Capitol Police and Sergeant at Arms responded immediately to the incident and have made several arrests.”

“Congressman Kildee is safe and his staff are all accounted for,” the statement added.

U.S. Capitol Police characterized the mob as “peaceful demonstrators.” In a statement on X, the agency wrote, “The Cannon Rotunda is now clear of demonstrators. We will provide [the] number of arrests tonight when we get the final number.” Among the crimes committed by protestors were crowding, obstructing, or incommoding, according to the Capitol Police.

A steady stream of Democratic lawmakers has decided to skip Netanyahu’s speech in solidarity with far-left activists who say Washington and the White House aren’t doing enough to limit civilian casualties in the conflict. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) was set to preside over the joint session but on Tuesday announced that she would be passing up the opportunity. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), who has generally supported Israel and called for a peaceful resolution, will preside instead.

Speaking with reporters in advance of his speech, Netanyahu said President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign does not dampen his enthusiasm to work with whoever will serve as the United States’ next president. “In this time of war and uncertainty, it’s important that Israel’s enemies know that America and Israel stand together,” the leader said.

The riot comes more than three years after the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol where pro-Trump protestors entered the building in an attempt to delay certification of the 2020 election. In the time since, the Department of Justice has overseen the conviction of hundreds of participants, though a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision narrowing the scope of the crimes means many now have the opportunity to challenge their sentences.
