In the ever-evolving saga of political figures embellishing their pasts, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has added another chapter. Once again, it appears that the truth has been stretched, and not for the first time. Walz, often touted as a high school football coach who led his team to a state championship, is now revealed to have been just an assistant coach, not the head honcho he has frequently implied.

Walz’s political narrative has long included his supposed tenure as the head coach who turned around Mankato West High School’s football program. However, a closer examination reveals that Walz served as a defensive coordinator under head coach Rick Sutton. While his role was significant, it was not the leadership position he and his supporters have often suggested.

The revelation is especially poignant as Walz is the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the presidency. His background as a public school teacher, National Guardsman, and football coach has been a cornerstone of his political appeal. However, the discovery that he was not the head coach, but rather an assistant, raises more questions about his authenticity and the integrity of his narrative.

In a video posted last week, Walz attempted to draw a parallel between his coaching days and the current political climate. “As a football coach, we’re back on offense,” Walz declared, emphasizing the Democratic party’s renewed vigor. “Vice President Harris is bringing the energy, making sure she’s going to be there to protect the democracy and get folks fired up, making sure we’re protecting reproductive rights, working for the middle class and bringing back some joy to our politics — so get out there, feel the excitement, get engaged.”

Yet, this renewed vigor might be overshadowed by the embellishments in his past. The notion of winning a state championship as a head coach in a state like Minnesota may not carry the weight Walz has hoped.

This is not the first inconsistency found in Walz’s past since being announced as Harris’ VP. On Wednesday, CNN fact-checked his military record revealing even more discrepancies. The examination looks into Walz ending his 24-year military career in 2005, right before his unit was deployed to Iraq—a point of contention given some of his recent political statements.

Satirical X account Three Year Letterman humorously reacted to the VP hopeful’s latest controversy.

“There is a significant difference between being stationed in a combat area during wartime and being under direct enemy fire,” noted CNN. The network’s fact-check pointed out that no evidence supports Walz’s implications of facing direct combat, labeling these assertions as “absolutely false.”

On Wednesday, the Minnesota National Guard also revealed that Walz was actually demoted from that rank. He enlisted in Nebraska and throughout his career held various posts across the United States and beyond, including training stints in extreme environments like the Arctic Circle. Walz rose to the rank of command sergeant major, the highest enlisted rank, although he “retired” as a master sergeant for benefits purposes due to not completing specific advanced coursework.

On Wednesday, JD Vance stormed into Wisconsin, crashing into the same turf where Harris and Walz were firing at Trump’s policies. Vance launched a fresh offensive scrutinizing Walz’s military record.
