Chelsea Clinton is reportedly eyeing a prestigious ambassadorship if Kamala Harris is elected president, according to a report from the New York Post.

“Chelsea really wants to be the ambassador to the UK,” a source close to the Clinton family told the outlet. “There’s a reason why Bill and Hillary came out in the first five minutes to support Kamala’s presidential bid — they were currying favor.”

While multiple Democratic Party and Biden family sources have hinted at dysfunction within party leadership, Bill and Hillary Clinton were indeed among the most prominent Democrats to immediately endorse Harris. The  source further told the New York Post that the Clintons have been “working on this idea for a long time.”

Ambassadorships to key allies like the U.K. Or France are generally reserved for top political allies and donors. In 2022, President Biden appointed Jane Hartley, a Democratic Party megadonor who solicited hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations for Biden’s election campaign, to the U.K. ambassador position.

Hartley is known as a “bundler,” meaning that she has solicited and coordinated over $100,000 in contributions to the party from groups of donors.

During his White House campaign, Biden vowed to end the practice of rewarding prestigious ambassadorships to wealthy donors. “I’m going to appoint the best people possible,” he said. “Nobody, in fact, will be appointed by me based on anything they contributed.”

Despite the pledge, more than 1/3 of President Biden’s picks were former “bundles,” according to a report from the New York Post.

The Clinton Family will be hoping to continue the trend, according to the family source. Chelsea Clinton, who currently works as vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, would also be interested in the French ambassadorship.

“I can well imagine that the UK ambassadorship is an aspiration for Chelsea, although she is a bit junior still — and London usually goes to a massive donor or fundraiser,” a longtime British embassy official told the New York Post.

Another source close to the family also stated that Chelsea, 44, has long had her eye on a prestigious diplomatic post.

“Foreign countries love high-profile people as ambassadors because it brings them more attention,” the second source said. “They would rather have someone more famous and less rich.”

Chelsea Clinton does have her fair share of connections to the United Kingdom. Like her father, she attended the prestigious Oxford University for both her undergraduate and doctorate degrees.

“She is 44 and has a long-held ambition for this. It’s important for her to have her own legacy,” the person in the know said. “She has always wanted to spend more time abroad, much like Caroline Kennedy” — who is the current ambassador to Australia and was ambassador to Japan under Obama.

The second source did throw cold water on the notion that the Clintons endorsed Harris with the goal of securing the gig for Chelsea, however. “Among stupid things said by clueless people, that’s pretty high up there,” they said.
