The first volley of shots struck Trump supporters Jim Copenhaver and David Dutch, leaving them critically wounded. Comperatore then told his family to get down and was shielding his daughter when a second volley of shots rang out.
Comperatore was struck in the head during the second volley and was unable to be saved after a nearby doctor attempted to provide life-saving aid.

In the days following the shooting, Trump honored Comperatore at the Republican National Convention. His firefighting gear was displayed prominently towards the back of the stage, while the former president at one point paused his speech in order to kiss the slain Trump supporter’s helmet.
Trump vowed to return to Butler, Pennsylvania for a rally that will serve as a celebration of Comperatore’s life, as well as first responders and bystanders who were affected by the shooting.
On Saturday, thousands of Trump supporters flocked to the rally site hours ahead of the former president’s arrival. The rooftop from which Crooks fired was now covered by a counter sniper, while the former president’s podium is now concealed by bulletproof glass.
