Just after Hurricane Helene ravaged Southeastern states, claiming at least 223 lives and leaving hundreds unaccounted for, President Joe Biden appeared confused when questioned about the storm’s aftermath.

The hurricane, which made landfall on September 26, has left many residents in isolated areas without power, making recovery efforts slow and communication difficult.

During an exchange with reporters on Thursday night, Biden was asked about the ongoing needs of the affected states. A reporter asked, “What do the states in the storm zone need — after what you saw today?”

Biden responded, “Oh, storm zone? I didn’t know which storm you’re talking about…” The remark seemed to suggest the president had forgotten about the hurricane that has dominated headlines and devastated communities.

Residents in the storm-ravaged areas are facing a long road to recovery, with some still cut off from aid. The president’s remark has fueled frustration among those who feel their struggles are being overlooked by Washington.

Hurricane Helene has become the most lethal storm to strike the U.S. mainland since Katrina in 2005, with potentially hundreds missing. Many of the fatalities occurred in North Carolina, with additional deaths in South Carolina and Georgia.
