French President Emmanuel Macron stood stunned as President Joe Biden was whisked away from a ceremonial event by his wife, leaving the European leader scrambling to save face amid the confusion.

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, world leaders gathered on Omaha Beach to honor the hundreds who died in 1944 taking a key western entrance to the country in World War II. Veterans of the day were dressed in uniform and prepared to shake hands with Biden and Macron when some kind of disturbance caused the U.S. president to exit early with help from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

In separate video clips, President Biden can be seen keeling over as Dr. Biden, Macron, and his spouse Brigitte Macron stood straight while dramatic music blared. Dr. Biden covered her face and appeared unsure of what to do.

Shortly afterward, she was spotted guiding the 81-year-old president away from the ceremony. A camera cuts back to Macron, who looks to an aide and points toward Biden before jogging toward the waiting veterans and continuing on without his counterpart.

Before leaving, Biden managed to shake a few hands and greet one veteran in a wheelchair, who stood to hug the president and take a photo, the AP reported. When he learned it was the man's birthday, Biden led the crowd in singing Happy Birthday.

The overseas trip provided President Biden a stage to rebuke what he called a growing “isolationist” movement in the U.S. and around the world as disillusionment with globalism continues to spread. Leaders in Argentina, India, and other major nations have tapped into a sentiment catalyzed by the 2016 election of former President Donald Trump. “Isolation was not the answer 80 years ago, and is not the answer today,” Biden told the crowd, a coy reference to his Republican rival.

“The men who fought here became heroes, not because they were the strongest, toughest or fiercest, although they were, but because they were given an audacious mission,” he said.

“They knew that things are worth fighting and dying for…here we proved the forces of liberty are stronger than the forces of conquest.”

The president's abrupt departure comes just one day after the Wall Street Journal published an exposé of behind-the-scenes concerns about Biden's mental acuity during high-stakes negotiations. Forty-five lawmakers and officials, both Republican and Democrat, told the outlet the president is “not the same” as they once knew him, in the words of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Even Democrats, including Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-NY), expressed concern over the president's grasp of the facts before receiving calls from the White House demanding they change their tone. Meeks later called the Journal back.

“They just, you know, said that I should give you a callback,” said Rep. Meeks, referring to the White House.
