In an emotional goodbye during his final episode taped in April and airing this evening, Pat Sajak bid farewell to his audience. The beloved 77-year-old host of 'Wheel of Fortune' stood on the ABC show's set speaking directly into the camera, delivering a heartfelt speech to his loyal fans. The touching moment was shared just hours before the show is to air.

“It's been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes, night after night, year after year, decade after decade,” Sajak began. “And I've always felt that the privilege came with a responsibility to keep this daily half hour a safe place for family fun. No social issues, no politics, nothing embarrassing, I hope. Just a game.”

“But gradually it became more than that, a place where kids learned their letters, where people from other countries honed their English skills, where families came together along with friends and neighbors and entire generations,” he said. “What an honor to have played even a small part in all that. Thank you for allowing me into your lives.”

Sajak announced his departure from 'Wheel of Fortune' in June of 2023. This fall, celebrity Ryan Seacrest will take over as the host.

Born in 1946 in Chicago, Illinois, Sajak began his career in broadcasting as a newsman and announcer. He joined 'Wheel of Fortune' in 1981, replacing the original host, Chuck Woolery. Sajak's charismatic presence and affable personality quickly made him a household name. Alongside co-host Vanna White, he has become synonymous with the show, guiding contestants through word puzzles and spinning the iconic wheel.

Sajak's work on the show has earned him several accolades, including multiple Daytime Emmy Awards. Beyond television, Sajak has made appearances in films and other TV shows, often playing himself or parodying his game show persona. His long tenure on 'Wheel of Fortune' solidified his status as one of the most enduring figures in American television history.

Last Thursday, co-host Vanna White delivered a tearful farewell to Sajak, whom she affectionately referred to as her “brother,” in a video. Together, Sajak and White formed a dynamic duo that captivated primetime television audiences for years.

“I can't believe that tomorrow is our last show together,” White said. “I don't know how to put into words what these past 41 years have meant to me, but I'm going to try. 8,000 episodes went by like that. When I first started, I was so green. You made me so comfortable and made me so confident, Pat. you made me who I am. You really did.”

“You're like a brother to me and I consider you a true lifelong friend who I will always adore. I love you, Pat.”

Sajak is set to collaborate with his friend and Hawaii newscaster Joe Moore, in a stage production of “Prescription: Murder.” The play, adapted from the pilot episode of TV’s “Columbo,” is directed by Rob Duval. The production will begin at the end of next month, according to Deadline.
