On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump took no prisoners in a tense exchange with an ABC News reporter during a convention geared toward Black journalists, ripping into the correspondent for asking what he called a “disgraceful” question. The reporter, Rachel Scott, asked Trump why Black voters should trust him with another four years in the White House. Scott kicked off the question-and-answer session with the former president by bringing up a plethora of comments he made in the past concerning what the left calls the “birther conspiracy” about former President Barack Obama, his alleged comments telling some Democratic lawmakers to “go back” to their countries of origin, and an alleged meeting with a so-called “white supremacist” held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

“Why should Black voters trust you?” Scott asked, according to The Hill. “I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner. A first question. You don’t even say hello, how are you,” Trump replied. “Are you with ABC, because I think they’re a fake news network, a terrible network? I think it’s disgraceful that I came here in good spirit… I love the Black population of this country, I’ve done so much for the Black population of this country.”

The report reveals the session started an hour late, which both the former president and his team say was the result of technical problems at the convention. Trump also noted that he was attending the National Association of Black Journalists convention, but Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent for the presidency, was nowhere to be found. Leadership for the organization explained that it was currently in talks with Harris’ team to schedule some kind of virtual or possibly an in-person interview for the month of September, but the two teams were not able to get something on the books for this week.

“I think it’s a very nasty question,” Trump repeated. “For you to start off a question and answer period especially when you’re 35 minutes late … in such a hostile manner, I think it’s a disgrace.” The former president also participated in an interview at the conference with two other journalists aside from Scott, including Semafor’s Kadia Goba, and Harris Faulkner from Fox News.

Scott was not the only reporter who was displeased with Trump. In fact, there were several others who were angry that he was even invited to the event, with several asking why the organization would want him there because, according to their own allegations, he has been hostile toward Black journalists. Organizers went on to defend their decision to invite the former president by stating there was value in conducting an interview with a leading candidate for the Oval Office.
