Biden sets new record for pardons, clemency; Hillary next? What about the illegals?

Joe Biden on Thursday burnished his legacy by setting a new record for the number of pardons and grants of clemency handed out from the White House in one day.

Days after pardoning his son of two federal crimes, and a potential decade-worth of others, Biden pardoned 39 individuals involved in what he termed non-violent offenses and commuted the sentences of 1,500 others.

“America was built on the promise of possibility and second chances,” Biden said in a statement. “As president, I have the great privilege of extending mercy to people who have demonstrated remorse and rehabilitation, restoring opportunity for Americans to participate in daily life and contribute to their communities, and taking steps to remove sentencing disparities for non-violent offenders, especially those convicted of drug offenses.”

Two individuals whose sentences were commuted by Biden are considered two of the Chicago area’s most notorious fraudsters: Former Dixon Comptroller Rita Crundwell, who embezzled nearly $54 million from the town to fund a lavish lifestyle; and Eric Bloom, the onetime leader of a Northbrook management firm who defrauded investors out of more than $665 million.

Curundwell was sentenced in 2013 to nearly 20 years in federal prison. In April 2020, Crundwell had petitioned a federal judge for early compassionate release based on her poor health and the Covid pandemic. She’d served about eight years behind bars before being released in 2021 to a halfway house, U.S. Bureau of Prisons records show. Crundwell would have completed her sentence in October 2028.

Bloom, 59, was sentenced in 2015 to 14 years in prison. He has been serving out his sentence at a residential reentry facility in Florida, prison records show. His sentence had been due to expire in May 2026.

Those pardoned on Thursday range in age from 36 to 75. About half are men and half are women, and they had been convicted of crimes such as drug offenses, fraud, or theft.

In his first term, President Donald Trump pardoned 143 people and commuted the sentences of another 94 individuals.

Others are advocating for Biden to commute the sentences of federal death row prisoners. Attorney General Merrick Garland paused federal executions. Biden had said on the campaign trail in 2020 that he wanted to end the death penalty but never did.

Biden has hinted that he will issue even more pardons.

Will Hillary Clinton be one of them?

Bill Clinton told “The View” on Thursday that he is open to his wife receiving a preemptive pardon.

Millions of Americans who rejected the Biden-Harris administration’s policies, particularly on immigration, are raising alarms on whether the lamest of lame ducks plans to pardon, via blanket asylum, the millions who illegally entered the U.S. on his watch.

Garrett Ziegler, an adviser in the first Trump administration, wrote in a social media post: “8 million illegals with zero respect for our statutes, Constitution, customs, et al. I don’t throw the T word around lightly bc it’s not merely a concept but a statute w specific elements. Joe B committed treason by not only allowing but encouraging millions of foreign illiterates into this Nation. The harm is incalculable.

“I am using ICE’s own ‘got away’ #s for that figure, btw, which by its essence is a floor. I think the numbers of illegals is 14-15 mil. The pardon of Hunter is disgusting but not a long term threat to the viability of the Republic. What Joe is apparently considering with pardons for the illegals is Republic ruining stuff.”
