Canada as 51st U.S. state? Trump still thinks it’s ‘a great idea’

Earlier this month, President-elect Donald Trump posted the following image to Truth Social:

Trump wrote just two words in the Dec. 3 post: “Oh Canada!”

Trump at the time had humorously suggested that if Canada fails to sustain its economy without a $100 billion annual exploitation of the U.S., it should consider becoming the 51st state, according to Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy,

“We’re told that when Trudeau told President-elect Trump that new tariffs would kill the Canadian economy, Trump joked to him that if Canada can’t survive without ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion per year, then maybe Canada should become the 51st state, and Trudeau can become its governor,” said Doocy.

Trudeau reportedly saw Trump’s comments as “teasing.”

On Wednesday, Trump again posted on Truth Social about the U.S. subsidizing Canada “to the tune” over over $100 billion per year.

“Makes no sense!” the president-elect wrote. “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!”

Trump had posted to Truth Social last month: “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders. This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”
