Media Matters, the leftist organization which advocates for the censorship of conservative media, is under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

X owner Elon Musk has sued Media Matters, accusing the group of coordinating advertiser boycotts of the social media platform.
A civil investigative demand obtained by Reuters revealed that the FTC is seeking all documents that Media Matters, founded by longtime Clinton ally David Brock, has produced or received as part of the lawsuit launched by Musk in 2023.
The FTC is seeking information about the Washington, DC-based organization’s communications with similar Democrat-aligned groups, including a World Federation of Advertisers initiative called Global Alliance for Responsible Media — another subject of an ongoing X lawsuit.
Trump-appointed FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson has said previously: “We must prosecute any unlawful collusion between online platforms, and confront advertiser boycotts which threaten competition among those platforms.”
Media Matters President Angelo Carusone called the move by the FTC a “threat” by the Trump Administration in a statement to the New York Post.
“Right-wing media figures holding key posts and abusing government power to target critics are two hallmarks of the Trump Administration,” Carusone said in a statement on Thursday. “Threats won’t work, our mission continues.”
Musk filed suit after he said Media Matters had accused X of running ads for Apple, Bravo, IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity next to “pro-nazi content.” Apple and IBM both announced they were suspending advertising on X after the Media Matters report.
In November 2023, Musk said X would be “filing a thermonuclear lawsuit against Media Matters and ALL those who colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company. Their board, their donors, their network of dark money, all of them.”
In a statement, Musk claimed Media Matters had manipulated the X platform in order to deceive advertisers.
“Media Matters for America posted a story that completely misrepresented the real experience on X, in another attempt to undermine freedom of speech and mislead advertisers,” Musk said. “Media Matters created an alternate account and curated the posts and advertising appearing on the account’s timeline to misinform advertisers about the placement of their posts.”
“Media Matters is pure evil,” he said in a follow up message.

Good! Media Matters has every right to complain about what I say —… pic.twitter.com/2k5APMHP8m
