Joe Biden on Monday commuted the death sentences of 37 of the 40 prisoners awaiting execution in federal prisons.
Those who had their sentences reduced from death to life without parole include convicts who murdered children and police officers.
Human Events editor Jack Posobiec noted: “Remember this the next time someone tells you Biden was a ‘good person.’ ”
Biden said the decision was “guided by [his] conscience and [his] experience as a public defender” and added that he was convinced that the U.S. “must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.”
The three who did not get a commuted death sentence are Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Pittsburgh synagogue shooter Robert Bowers, and South Carolina church shooter Dylan Roof.
Among those who had their death sentences commuted is Jorge Avila-Torrez, who stabbed to death two little girls, ages 8 and 9. Laura Hobbs and Krystal Tobias were riding their bikes to school when Avila-Torrez sexually assaulted and stabbed them to death in Chicago in 2005. In 2009, Avila-Torrez strangled to death naval officer Amanda Snell in Arlington, Virginia when she was in her barracks.
Biden also commuted the death sentence of Thomas Steven Sanders. He was sentenced to death in 2014 after being convicted of kidnapping and murdering a 12-year-old girl. Sanders shot the child four times in addition to cutting her throat.
Biden also commuted the death sentence of Daryl Lawrence, who was sentenced for the murder of a special duty police officer in 2006 in Ohio. Lawrence killed the officer during a bank robbery.
Anthony Battle, another whose death sentence was commuted, killed a prison guard with a hammer in 1994 while he was serving for the rape and murder of his wife.
Also granted clemency by Biden two days before Christmas is Iouri Mikhel, who was sentenced to death for the murder of five immigrants after kidnapping them for ransom. Despite getting the ransom payment, he killed them anyway.
Another child murderer on the list of convicts Biden granted clemency is Kaboni Savage, who was convicted of killing or ordering the killing of 12 individuals in Philadelphia when he was a drug dealer. The murders included four children.
Among the 1,499 individuals whose sentences Biden commuted two weeks ago was Josephine Gray, a Maryland woman known as the “Black Widow” for her suspected role in the deaths of two ex-husbands and a lover.
Gray was convicted in 2002 and sentenced to 40 years in prison for insurance fraud linked to the deaths of three men between 1974 and 1996. Investigators alleged she either killed or helped kill her victims. Police found voodoo-related materials in her possession, including dolls filled with needles, the New York Post reported.
“This doesn’t feel like a ‘rule of law’ moment for the Biden administration,” James Trusty, who prosecuted Gray, told The Washington Free Beacon. “It pisses me off, as you can imagine.”
