Trump’s sense of humor wins again with Pope post

by WorldTribune Staff, May 4, 2025 Real World News

President Donald Trump and the Catholic Church.

Are there two things the major corporate media loathe more?

Asked on Tuesday about whom he’d like to see become the next Catholic pontiff, Trump told reporters: “I’d like to be pope. That would be my No. 1 choice.”

Then the White House on Friday posted the following on X.

And the humorless media’s rage meter broke.

Townhall.com’s Matt Vespa noted: “Are they upset about this because we know liberals hate religion? If there is one person or thing that the Left hates more than Donald Trump or Elon Musk, it’s the Catholic Church. A funny post from the Trump White House showed the president as the next Bishop of Rome. Cafeteria Catholics, atheists, and other heathens, all afflicted with Trump Derangement Syndrome, took to social media to voice their faux outrage.”

Never-Trumper Bill Kristol poked Vice President JD Vance, writing on X: “Hey, [VP] Vance, you fine with this disrespect and mocking of the Holy Father?”

Vance responded:

Back on Tuesday, Trump followed up the obvious joke about his becoming pope by saying he actually had no preference, adding, “I must say, we have a cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York who’s very good, so we’ll see what happens.”

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, is not on the short list of possible contenders for the top spot, but it does include another American, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, archbishop of Newark, New Jersey. There has never been a pope from the U.S.

About 135 Catholic cardinals will soon be tasked with entering a secret conclave to choose the next pope, with no clear frontrunner in sight.
