  • A resurfaced video of Harris from a 2019 town hall, when she was running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, showed her answering in the affirmative when asked by an attendee if she would work to close migrant detention centers. The answer coincides with other anti-border enforcement commentary she made as a 2020 candidate and as a U.S. senator from California“I’m a volunteer with the Center for Worker Justice,” the attendee said in the video. “I want to know, when you become president, would you be committing to close the immigration detention centers?”

    Planned Parenthood Set to Close Four Facilities in New York State, Pause Abortions at 20+ Weeks in Manhattan Facility

  • The organization announced that due to “compounding financial and political challenges,” facilities in “Goshen, Amsterdam, Cobleskill, and Staten Island” will be shuttered.
  • There will also be a temporary pause to its “deep sedation pain management services” at the Manhattan Health Center, citing increased costs, thus pausing late-term abortions.
  • According to The City, the Manhattan Health Center “will no longer provide abortions at 20-plus weeks or ‘deep sedation” for patients seeking to be put under for the insertion of intrauterine devices for birth control and surgical abortions.”

    ‘They’ll Try To Get Up Again’: US Rushes To Contain Resurgence Of Islamic State In Syria

  • U.S. forces are rushing to subdue a resurgence of the Islamic State in Syria, several U.S. and allied officials told The Wall Street Journal.
  • The U.S. largely defeated the Islamic State in Syria alongside the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in 2019 through a coordinated global military effort to remove the terrorist group from the area. But the terrorist group is now expanding its forces and launching attacks on allied troops at high levels, and U.S. and SDF forces are quickly working to break apart the group before it becomes too dangerous a threat, officials told the WSJ.  
  • “This year has been the worst year since we defeated Islamic State,” Gen. Rohilat Afrin, co-commander of the SDF, told the WSJ, speaking from a U.S. base in Syria. “No matter how much you knock them down, they’ll try to get up again.”

This was not a hostile interview; it was an extremely comprehensive talk. This was much better—and infinitely more informative—than Dana Bash’s hostile attacks on Vance when she “interviewed” him.
  • The assassination attempt. Musk complimented Trump’s courage under fire. Trump, in turn, mourned Corey Comperatore and spoke well of the other two shooting victims.  He also complimented the Secret Service sniper and agents around him while noting the USSS’s failure to coordinate on the ground.   • Inflation. Trump says that it is caused by the price of oil and is a disaster. Our national debt is not sustainable and will destroy the country.   • Internation situation. Musk states that the world’s bad actors need to be afraid of the U.S. Neither Biden nor Harris will ever make them afraid. Trump responds that the Biden administration’s and Harris’s inability to inspire fear is why our world is dangerous and in turmoil. He points out that Biden shut down the Keystone Pipeline at the same time he approved the Russian pipeline. If Trump were in charge, neither Hamas nor Russia would have attacked.
  • Elon’s Government Efficiency Commission: Trump embraces Argentina’s Milei for his small government approach. Musk notes that both Argentina and Venezuela should be doing well, but bad government policy hampers the latter.

Musk thinks that CO2 buildup will become a problem of over 1000 ppm CO2. We need to move to it within 75 to 100 years. Trump is not all in on that.

  • Regulatory bureaucracy: Musk states that, in general, overregulation destroys society. Trump agrees and says that he was able to address it in one very important area—drug approval.

  • The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has filed federal labor charges against former President Donald Trump and billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk.
  • Specifically, they have accused Trump and Musk of attempting to intimidate and threaten workers who exercise their rights to engage in protected activities such as strikes.
  • During the interview, Trump made a statement regarding striking workers, suggesting that companies should have the right to make tough decisions about their workforce.
  • “You want to quit? They go on strike, I won’t mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, That’s OK, you’re all gone. You’re all gone. So, every one of you is gone,” Trump said.
  • Trump’s comment referred to Musk’s acquisition of Twitter/X, where nearly 80% of the company was dismissed, though his language mistakenly described the employees as striking; in reality, Musk had already planned the layoffs when he decided to acquire Twitter.

    The nation’s best hackers found vulnerabilities in voting machines — but no time to fix them

  •   Some of the best hackers in the world gathered in Las Vegas over the weekend to try to break into voting machines that will be used in this year’s election — all with an eye to helping officials identify and fix vulnerabilities.
  • The problem? Their findings will likely come too late to make any fixes before Nov. 5.
  • In one sense, it’s the normal course of events: Every August, hackers at the DEF CON conference find security gaps in voting equipment, and every year the long and complex process of fixing them means nothing is implemented until the next electoral cycle.
  • Organizers and participants at the DEF CON Voting Village found cyber vulnerabilities in everything from voting machines to e-poll books, but there is no time before the November elections to fully implement their findings.
  • But Election Day security is under particular scrutiny in 2024. That’s both because of increasing worries that foreign adversaries will figure out how to breach machines, and because President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated allegations of widespread fraud in 2020 undermined confidence in the vote among his supporters.
