NY Fed: Worry over outlook increases amid stable inflation expectations

  Americans grew more worried about the economic outlook in February even as their expectations of the future path of inflation were little changed, a report on Monday from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said.

    If Canada stopped supplying electricity to the U.S., it’d take a noticeable financial hit, but it wouldn’t be catastrophic—more like a sharp pinch than a knockout punch. In 2023, Canada exported $3.2 billion USD worth of electricity to the U.S., per the U.S. Energy Information Administration, down from $4.6 billion in 2022 due to drought-reduced hydro output. That’s a chunk of change—about 0.1% of Canada’s $2.26 trillion USD GDP—but it’s not the backbone of the economy. Compare it to oil exports, which topped $123 billion USD in 2023, and it’s clear electricity is a smaller player.
    The real losers would be the provincial utilities driving the trade. Hydro-Québec, for instance, made $2.8 billion CAD in net income in 2023, with exports (mostly to the U.S.) accounting for roughly 20-25% of its revenue, based on historical trends from its annual reports. BC Hydro and Manitoba Hydro also bank millions—BC Hydro’s export sales hit $500 million CAD some years, though 2023 was leaner. If that tap shuts off, these government-owned outfits would see profits shrink, forcing provinces to either cut services, hike domestic rates, or lean harder on other revenue like taxes. Quebec, especially, might feel it—hydro exports are a pride point and a fiscal cushion.

    But Canada wouldn’t just lose money; it’d lose leverage too. Excess power from dams can’t be stored indefinitely—hydro plants either sell it or scale back production, which isn’t free.   • Approximately 60 drones were launched from Ukraine overnight to attack the Russian capital city of Moscow.  This is the largest escalation of drone/missile attacks into Russia so far.

She described using what she called “subterfuge” and “strategic sleight-of-hand” to push her own recommendations, particularly on issues like asymptomatic spread and testing, which sometimes clashed with the White House’s or CDC’s official positions.
    In the book, Birx detailed how she would edit reports—such as those sent to governors—after they were reviewed by administration officials. She’d reinsert contested points in less obvious places, like the middle of sentences or state-specific sections, to avoid detection by those who might object, including Trump’s team. For example, she wrote, “After the heavily edited documents were returned to me, I’d reinsert what they had objected to, but place it in those different locations,” and she admitted this wasn’t the only time she engaged in such tactics. Her goal, she claimed, was to ensure her view of the science reached state leaders, even if it meant bypassing or obscuring the administration’s oversight.
    She also confirmed in a 2021 CBS Face the Nation interview that Trump was shown “parallel data streams” by others—implying figures like Scott Atlas—that differed from her own, which she saw as a problem. However, her book reveals she too played fast and loose with how she presented data to steer policy, often without explicit approval.
