Ford Ditches Plans For Electric SUV As Industry Continues To Backpedal From EVs

  • The trend of legacy automakers ditching their plans and investments in EVs continues, with Ford reportedly the latest to cancel plans for a large three-row electric sport-utility vehicle, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.
  • The company will take $1.9 billion in related special charges and write-downs as a result, the report said.
  • Ford is canceling due to pricing pressures and increased competition, instead opting to focus on hybrid versions of its popular Explorer and Expedition models.
  • This decision reflects a broader trend among automakers that we have written about over the last year or two, especially since the UAW extorted negotiated their latest labor contracts from the Detroit automakers.

  • Shareholders named in the document include some of Silicon Valley’s most prominent venture capitalists and entrepreneurs — as well as a fund linked with hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
  • The filing lists nearly 100 entities with a stake in X, although many appear to represent different funds controlled by the same firm or person. Other investors include venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al Saud; Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey; and 8VC, a venture capital firm co-founded by Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of intelligence contractor and data analysis platform Palantir.
  • X originally filed the list of investors under seal as part of a lawsuit brought in 2023 by former Twitter employees who alleged that the entrepreneur violated their arbitration agreements by failing to pay them certain fees after he bought the company.   •  Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to pressure the Israeli government to yield to Hamas’s demands for a hostage deal.
  • On Monday, Netanyahu met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and agreed to a U.S. “bridging” proposal that aimed to reconcile Israel’s demands with those of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, which holds 109 hostages.

  • Donald Trump has been accused of violating federal law by the American Muckrackers PAC after allegations were made he called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the ceasefire deal the U.S. is helping negotiate between Israel and Hamas.
  • The former president allegedly made the call on August 14, according to Axios, and repeated in Reuters, which cited two unnamed “U.S. sources who were briefed on the call.”
  • This claim was reported again by PBS host Judy Woodruff on Tuesday, who said, “the reporting is that former President Trump is on the phone with the PM of Israel urging him not to cut a deal right now because it’s believed that would help the Harris campaign.”
  • Both Netanyahu’s office and Trump denied that the call took place. In a statement quoted by The Times of Israel, a spokesperson said: “Contrary to media reports, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not speak yesterday with former President Donald Trump.”
  • Woodruff has since apologized for her comments, saying it was not based on original reporting and that she had not seen later reporting that the story had been denied by Israel and Trump. “This was a mistake, and I apologize for it,” Woodruff said.

    China’s CDC Reports New COVID-19 Cases Hit Nearly 20 Percent

  • The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that new COVID-19 infections in the country of origin have increased to nearly 20 percent in the past few weeks, as two new Omicron subvariants spread across the country.
  • But while increases to China’s official COVID-19 test positivity rate mirrors that of the rest of the world, its number of reported COVID-19 deaths remains orders of magnitude lower than is expected for a country of its population, given the ongoing reports of COVID-19-related deaths in other countries.
  • According to its Aug. 8 report, China’s CDC reported that the COVID-19 test positivity rate in the country spiked to 18.7 percent in the last week of July, up from 8.9 percent at the start of the month. According to the official data, that rate has not exceeded 8 percent since the start of the year.
  • The trend of China’s official infection data parallels that reported in the United States. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC), in its Aug. 8 biweekly update, reported that the COVID-19 test positivity rate in the United States had increased in the past six months to 17.6 percent.
  • According to the World Health Organization’s monitoring data from 84 countries, the overall COVID-19 test positivity rate stands above 10 percent but varies by region. That percentage has been rising for weeks, it said. Europe also reported a 20 percent increase in its positive COVID-19 tests since the start of 2024.

  • Media Research Center surveyed 1,200 “registered Democrats and Independents who voted for Joe Biden in 2020” and found that on 10 “different aspects of Harris’s public record … between 71% and 86% of these Democrats and Independents said they either had not heard of Harris’s position or were unsure.”
  • Data shows that when it comes to the key issues like immigration and crime, most Democrats and Independent-Biden supporters have been kept in the dark on Harris’ most communist-like stances. For example, 78% of voters surveyed were unaware that Harris promoted a fund that led to violent protesters being bailed out of jail during the 2020 riots. Seventy-five percent of those polled were unaware that Harris was once named “the most liberal U.S. senator in 2019.”
