The Washington-based fund had previously been criticized for its optimistic assessment of Russia’s economy The Russian economy has been growing faster than many economists projected, IMF First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath admitted on Monday in an interview with Foreign Policy magazine.
Russian GDP climbed by 3.6% in 2023 and the country’s authorities expect growth of at least 2.3% this year.
The IMF significantly raised its growth forecast for the Russian economy earlier this year, projecting 2.6% growth in 2024. The estimate is a sharp increase from its October forecast of a 1.1% gain. The forecast for 2025 was also increased by 0.1 percentage point from the October estimate, to 1.1%.

For reference, that particular model would have retailed somewhere around $50,000 brand new. While we’ve seen some staggering high prices being entertained for EVs in need of a new battery pack this has to be one of more egregious examples on record.
According to an invoice from a Seattle-area BMW service center shared on Reddit, the owner was quoted $64,588 for parts last August. After taxes, that amounted to $71,208 and that’s before anyone bothered to factor in labor. The invoice has since been shared by CarBuzz and is making the rounds as the latest reason to feel uneasy about EV ownership.
The post was followed by (mostly i3) drivers sharing similar accounts of how much they were asked to spend on similar battery jobs. Most cited repair bills around $11,000 with parts and labor included. However, there were a few individuals claiming to have been quoted upwards of $30,000 for having a fresh battery installed into their BMW.

Then there’s the fact that the nation’s grid simply can’t support all that recharging – California already has been sending out advisories for owners not to charge. And then there’s the limited range, extended recharging times, both worsened by bad weather.
But now a report in the Washington Times explains that those batteries are heavy, and EVs can weight up to 50% more than internal combustion motor vehicles.
And that weight damages roads, bridges and parking garages, with those vehicles easily plowing through safety guardrails while posing a higher danger to other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists traveling the same routes.
“The problems associated with EVs are poised to grow as more consumers purchase the cars under the Biden administration’s plan to eliminate gas-powered vehicles and the tailpipe emissions that come with them,” the report explained.
It explained engineers writing recently for Structure Magazine suggested construction companies, and building codes, need to make accommodation for the higher weight.
Parking garages, they said, should be redesigned to hold more weight.
That’s because some hold hundreds of vehicles, and just one EV. A Ford truck, weighs in at 8,240 pounds, nearly a ton more than the gas-powered version of the same pickup.
“Significantly increasing passenger vehicle weights combined with recently reduced structural design requirements will result in reduced factors of safety and increased maintenance and repair costs for parking structures,” the engineers wrote. “There are many cases of parking structure failures, and the growing demand for EVs will only increase the probability of failure.”
Then there are those guardrails, installed to minimize damage when traffic goes awry.

The consumer-price index, the Labor Department’s broad measurement of what consumers pay for goods and services, rose 3.1 percent from a year earlier.
Economists were expecting a year-0ver-year increase of 3.0 percent. The 12-month price rise was 3.4 percent in December.
Federal Reserve officials have said they look at several months of data to detect trends in inflation. The three month annualized inflation rate rose to four percent in January from 3.3 percent. The six-month annualized rate rose to 3.6 percent from 3.2 percent. Both indicate a trend of rising inflation well above the level the Fed says is compatible with a healthy economy.

Title IX — was repeatedly targeted for interpretation and reinterpretation within the Obama administration.
Title IX is the 1972 statute that protects girls’ and women’s athletics, and prevents schools from tolerating sexual harassment or other sex discrimination. But in 2015, one bureaucrat in the Department of Education (DOE) announced sweeping new Title IX policy in a letter to a transgender rights activist, saying that schools throughout the country also had to treat a person’s so-called gender identity as conclusive for the purpose of assigning students to “restrooms, locker rooms, shower facilities, housing, athletic teams, and single-sex classes.”
When President Trump won office in 2016, he swiftly set about to change the Department of Education’s inappropriate habit of “regulating by letter.” And in 2020, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos succeeded in actually enshrining Title IX changes into law — by announcing regulations that balanced the need to eliminate sexual harassment with the need to protect due process.
But in 2021, the Biden administration announced it would try to scrap DeVos’ Title IX rules. The new approach taken by this president, however, goes far beyond merely undoing his predecessor’s policies.
Instead, under President Biden, the DOE is proposing to revive President Obama’s old policies and treat Title IX as if it also covers sexual orientation and gender identification discrimination in schools throughout the United States. Title IX’s language specifies that it only prohibits “sex” discrimination, not sexual orientation or gender identity, but that hasn’t stopped Obama, Biden, or their bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., from trying.
On Feb. 2, 2024, the DOE submitted the final touches to its new Title IX rule, which is expected to receive the president’s approval. In that new rule, the DOE will force K-12 schools and colleges to enact policies that specifically cover sexual orientations and gender identities of all kinds. Presumably, this new rule will include bisexuals, polyamorous individuals, and potentially myriad “non-binary” (neither male nor female) “gender identities.”

China’s state-owned companies seek to seed Western societies with an expanding array of technological vulnerabilities, according to a new warning from a NATO ally’s spy agency.
“The average Western individual still perceives the Chinese technological landscape as abstract and distant, failing to recognize its potential as a threat,” Estonia’s Foreign Intelligence Service warned in its annual report, released Monday. “The rise and global proliferation of Chinese technology are not solely the result of Chinese talents’ diligence and entrepreneurship; it is part of China’s strategic efforts to enhance its political influence alongside exporting its standards.”
China’s desire to use technology for strategic purposes emerged as a major priority for U.S. officials in 2019, when then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo conducted a diplomatic tour of central Europe, warning NATO allies against the risks of allowing Huawei to build its next-generation telecommunications infrastructure. Yet that campaign hasn’t prevented Chinese companies from embedding in a variety of other sectors.
“Over the past year, we have witnessed how Chinese technology is penetrating an entirely new area in Estonia — the electrical grid,” the report said. “After being excluded from 5G networks, Huawei has targeted cloud services and solar and wind farms. Both Huawei and other Chinese companies seek to supply Estonian electricity networks with inverters and energy storage systems connecting solar and wind farms to the national grid.”
Those economic ventures reflect Beijing’s intention “to create deliberate dependencies” in the West, according to Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service chief Kaupo Rosin. “China’s long-term plan to create a divide between Europe and the United States remains unchanged,” the report noted. “China has stepped up its efforts to invite European officials to visit China, often fully covering the expenses associated with these trips. … However, it is important to underscore that China continues recruiting foreigners, specifically within its borders.”
