The World Economic Forum (WEF) published an article on Thursday calling for a “reinvention” of the global food supply and praising “alternative proteins” made by “animal-free” products.
The WEF is an international advocacy organization founded by Klaus Schwab that seeks to bring world leaders together “to shape global, regional and industry agendas.” The organization has been criticized in the past for publishing an article encouraging people to eat bugs to “reduce climate change.”
In Thursday’s article, titled “Feeding the future: why Renovation and Reinvention are key to saving our food system,” WEF New Frontiers of Nutrition Project Fellow Juliana Weltman Glezer laments the greenhouse gas emissions caused by food production and warns of a 60% increase in food demand when the worldwide population hits 10 billion.
“Many of the ways we grow, manufacture and consume food are causing a dual crisis of human and environmental health, and the complexity will only intensify,” Glezer wrote.

While experts extol the health and environmental benefits of a diet free of animal products, new research suggests that consuming ultra-processed vegan food can increase the risk of heart death.
Ultra-processed foods include packaged goods, drinks, cereals and ready-to-eat products that contain colors, emulsifiers, flavors and other additives. UPFs are typically high in sugar, saturated fat, and salt and devoid of vitamins and fiber.
Researchers found that for every 10% increase in plant-based foods, the risk of death from heart disease fell by 20%.
Yet, when the increase in plant-based foods came from UPFs, it was linked to a 12%rise in heart disease-related deaths.
Lead study author Fernanda Rauber explained that the composition and processing methods of UPFs can lead to higher blood pressure and cholesterol.
“Food additives and industrial contaminants present in these foods might cause oxidative stress and inflammation, further aggravating the risks,” she said.
“Those shifting towards plant-based foods should also think about the degree of processing involved before making their choices.”
Dr. Eszter Vamos, co-author of the study, noted the deceptive marketing and public perception of plant-based products as healthy.
“While ultra-processed foods are often marketed as healthy foods, this large study suggests that plant-based ultra-processed foods do not seem to have protective health effects and are linked to poor health outcomes,” she said.3

An illegal alien from El Salvador has been charged with brutally raping and murdering Rachel Morin, a mother-of-five, on a Maryland hiking trail last year.
Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 23, was arrested for the murder in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Friday.

An Arizona man allegedly plotted to gun down black people at an Atlanta Bad Bunny concert in an attempt to spark a race war ahead of the presidential election, according to federal prosecutors.
Mark Adams Prieto, 58, was indicted Tuesday nearly a month after he was arrested over the alleged plot, in which he planned to murder as many black people as he could with semi-automatic rifles he’d bought through cash deals or trades to avoid detection from gun regulators.
He was outed after a source he’d recruited to participate in the massacre notified FBI agents, leading to a months-long investigation tat ended after he attempted to recruit an undercover agent to join the mass shooting, according to an affidavit obtained by NBC News.

The judge overseeing Donald Trump‘s classified documents case is set to take the “unusual” step of hearing arguments on whether Special Counsel Jack Smith should be removed from the prosecution from those not connected to the proceedings, a legal expert has said.
On Friday June 21, Cannon will hear arguments from several people not involved in the federal case, who will claim that Smith was unlawfully appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland as this was not first approved by the Senate.

Welfare offices and other agencies in 49 US states are providing voter registration forms to migrants without requiring proof of citizenship, leading Republicans and conservatives to call for swift federal action to stop the handouts.
Every state but Arizona — which recently passed a law barring the practice on state but not federal forms — gives applicants for either welfare benefits, driver’s licenses, or in some cases, mail-in ballots voter registration forms without demanding proof of citizenship.
There is currently no requirement on federal voting forms to provide proof of US citizenship, though it is illegal to falsely claim one is a citizen or for a non-citizen to cast a ballot in a federal election.
But millions of migrants with humanitarian parole, refugee or asylum status are eligible for benefits that would bring them to the offices where voter registration takes place.
The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993 ordered states to register voters at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and agencies where Americans apply for public benefits — and those offices are required by federal law to hand over the registration forms along with the application papers.If an applicant attests that they are a US citizen, that is considered valid on its face and the person is registered to vote.
The House Administration Committee last month approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to require states to receive proof of citizenship when anyone registers to vote by mail, at a DMV or a welfare agency office.
The SAVE Act would further allow Americans to bring civil lawsuits against election officials who don’t have their agencies demand proof-of-citizenship documents.
A spokesperson for Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY), the lone Democrat who opposed the bill in committee proceedings, did not respond to a request for comment.
Even if it passes the House, the SAVE Act will face an uphill battle for consideration by the Democrat-controlled Senate, though several Republican members of the upper chamber have already signaled their support.
