Electric grid operators warn U.S. Supreme Court that new EPA rules will cause widespread blackouts

  • Organizations that manage, coordinate and monitor electricity service for 156 million Americans across 30 states are warning that the Biden-Harris administration’s power plant rule will be catastrophic for the nation’s grid. Four regional trade organizations (RTO), as they’re called, recently filed an amicus brief, also known as a friend of the court brief, in support of a multi-state lawsuit against the EPA over the rule.
  • The EPA released the rules in April. They require coal-fired power plants that will be operating past 2039 to begin implementing carbon-capture technologies in just eight years. New gas-fired power plants will also need to add the technologies, with those operating 40% of their annual capacity or more to add carbon capture starting in 2032.
  • Isaac Orr and Mitch Rolling, co-founder and researchers with Always On Energy Research, performed an analysis on behalf of the North Dakota Transmission Authority on the impacts the rules would have on the Midcontinent Independent Systems Operator (MISO), an RTO that covers a swath of the center of the U.S.
  • The researchers say they found a number of problems. The EPA grossly overestimated the ability of intermittent wind and solar to deliver reliable electricity during peak demand periods, according to the analysis, and it also found the agency didn’t perform any reliability analysis on the rules. The result would be blackouts lasting days in some cases.
  • “So they don’t say things out in the open, that maybe they should,” Rolling said.
  • The 2019 blackouts in California, the deadly Texas blackouts in the 2021 Winter Storm Uri, and the Christmas 2022 blackouts in the Southeast, Rolling said, should have been a wakeup call for the country that there are growing risks to our electricity grid. So far, they haven’t deterred the net-zero by 2050 advocates from their agenda.

    Kamala releases economic ‘plan’ that copies Bidenomics point by point

     

  • Vice President Kamala Harris released an 82-page document explaining her vision for the economy on Wednesday, but the plan shares much in common with President Joe Biden’s economic agenda.
  • The plan, titled “A New Way Forward For The Middle Class,” proposes to build upon Biden initiatives like student loan debt cancellation, industrial policy, huge subsidies for green energy and going after corporations for alleged price gouging. Prior to quitting the presidential race under immense political pressure, voters were largely dissatisfied with Biden’s economy, which had come to be defined by 40-year high inflation.
  • “Harris isn’t going to stray very far from current Biden policies,” 
  • Harris aims to “[make] corporations and the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share in taxes,” something she plans to do by essentially replicating the $5 trillion tax hike that Biden’s fiscal year 2024 budget request called for. Some of Harris’ “common sense” reforms that would fuel this tax hike include a 25% unrealized capital gains tax for high-earning Americans and a top capital gains tax rate of 33%, an aggressive-but-less-ambitious alternative to the 44.6% rate that Biden has proposed.
  • Harris’ plan also calls for a $25,000 subsidy for qualifying first-time homebuyers. This would actually end up raising home prices, in large part because “the best way to reduce housing prices is to build more housing, not to subsidize existing housing,” according to Young.

  • There are a lot of economic impacts that can be created by a dockworker strike; they range from inconvenient to severe depending on the industry and sector therein.  With the U.S. manufacturing base diminished, imported goods now represent the system to deliver essential products into our nation.
  • Example: Within the network of essential goods, refined fuel is a critical component.  I am not sure how the Port of Tampa and Port of Everglades would be impacted, but most fuel deliveries into Florida come from these two ports. I would consider fuel a vital and essential product.  Stop the offloading of fuel and things can get sketchy quickly for the Florida economy.
  • On a global scale, stopping the export of USA generated Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) could be a potential problem for Europe. The EU is now dependent on non-Russian energy stores, the USA exports are a component of those needs.  The U.S. Maritime Alliance, or USMX, an organization bargaining on behalf of the dockworkers’ employers, claims that only 25,000 workers will be impacted by the likely work stoppage. I don’t think we quite know which sectors would be most affected.
  • On the agricultural side, deliveries of perishable imports like bananas would likely lead to almost immediate price increases if those products were stopped.  
  • ♦ One angle is predictable.  If there are shortages of goods that create problems for those in politics, hurricane Helene will likely be used as an excuse for supply chain disruption.  It will be difficult to gauge the accuracy of any deflective claim.  The ability to deflect this scenario, it’s not the ports – it’s the bridges and roads, can be exploited by the Biden administration.

    Gavin Newsom Reverses Kamala Harris-Promoted Truancy Prosecutions Against Parents 
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom   signed a bill into law that reverses measures supported by Vice President Kamala Harris that prosecuted parents for truancy.
  • While serving as the state’s attorney general, Harris praised the law and even used it against parents of children who were not showing up to school, an issue that has been highlighted as the 2024 presidential campaign continues.
  • SB-691, authored by State Sen. Anthony Portantino, modifies how school districts notify parents or guardians when their child has been classified as a truant. It also implements changes focused on improving attendance through supportive measures rather than targeting parents for prosecution.
  • The new law removes language related to legal penalties, including potential prosecution, and suggests that parents attend class with their children.
  • Under the legislation, districts sending information to parents about their child’s truancy will also include information about available mental health and supportive services for both the student and their family.
  • The law reinforces parents’ right to meet with school officials to discuss remedies for their children’s truancy. It also mandates that truancy notifications include information on how missing school can negatively impact a student’s academic success.
  • Portantino, who submitted the bill, argued that issuing threats to prosecute parents is not the best way to make sure their children attend class. “When we actually provide pertinent information and don’t try to criminalize parents, we actually get more kids in seats,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle.

    • The Startling Metadata Hidden within the Polling: Voters Love Trump

  •  American Thinker partnered with Rasmussen polling to look at the battleground states, plus a few blue states in which there seems to be a softening toward Trump as Kamala’s campaign blunders along. What emerged from the ten states (AZ, GA, MI, MN, NC, NM, NV, PA, VA, and WI) was fascinating.   Most amazingly, voters in all states, often by significant majorities, love Trump; they just don’t know it.

  • I’ve appended below a chart showing my analysis of the ten-state poll data. Here’s a link to a bigger version of the chart.

     

     

  • Most obviously, the chart is a sea of red. In a sane world, anchored to reality, the 2024 election should be a Trump blow-out.
  •   The number one issue is the economy, and the most common number two issue is the border. Abortion is the next most common issue. (There were other issues in the poll, but these were almost invariably the top three.)
  • The economy is a red issue because Kamala is the incumbent. If voters are concerned about the economy, it means that they think the current situation is lousy, favoring the opponent (Trump). The same rationale applies to the border. Abortion, of course, is a blue issue because it’s the only thing Kamala can campaign on.
  • Block three reflects people’s responses when asked what they want the new president to address first. People across all but the bluest of blue states are concerned about immigration and the economy—which means they want a change from the status quo. Kamala is the status quo, so this favors Trump.
  •  In every state, voters agree by huge margins that they are not better off, that they feel hopeless about their children, and that the world is less safe than it was four years ago. This is as profound an indictment as you will ever see of the current administration.
  • People agreed that the biggest threats, both foreign and domestic are either China or the Democrat party. Most worry about the Republican party, too, although a bit less, so that’s a win.
  • The most interesting metric is that when it comes to threats from evil actors overseas, voters overwhelmingly feel that Trump is more capable of handling those potentially existential threats. Only in New Mexico are voters split on whether Trump or Kamala is the better candidate.
  •  the red chart shows that Trump must make a play for moderate Democrats and Independents. Again, he will not convince them to vote for him, but he needs to remind them that (a) they’re suffering terribly from Harris-Biden policies and (b) that they know he can make their lives better. That’s a winning message that needs to be shouted from the treetops.
