The Biden administration is planning to ease restrictions this spring on tailpipe emissions that were put in place to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles (EV) in a bid to appeal to unions and the auto industry, according to The New York Times.
The rules would give automakers more time to facilitate the EV transition, with looser emissions standards meaning that automakers would have until after 2030 to switch over the bulk of their production, as opposed to just a few years under current regulations, according to the NYT. President Joe Biden has long sought to curry the favor of union workers, particularly the United Auto Workers, who endorsed the president in the 2024 presidential election last month but are wary of the effect that an EV transition could have on their current jobs, as less labor is required to produce an EV and their production is not covered under the same union contract
The Biden administration’s goals of electrifying America’s vehicles have faced severe headwinds from poor demand, with sales only increasing from 3.1% in January 2023 to 3.6% in December 2023 in terms of market value despite an increase in the share of inventory from 2.8% to 5.7% in that same time frame. The administration’s rollout of EV chargers has also run into red tape, leading to only two charging stations being built as of December despite $7.5 billion in allocated funds.
The U.S. government is expected to pay an additional $1.1 trillion in interest over the coming decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s latest estimates. Interest costs are on pace to surpass defense this year as one of the largest government expenses in the budget. Only Social Security and Medicare are forecast to be bigger burdens in the coming years.
The U.S. government raises money by auctioning Treasury bonds to a swath of global investors. The bigger the deficit, the more bonds it must issue to finance otherwise unfunded spending. Investors could demand higher yields to buy the deluge of Treasurys, which would hurt bond prices. Ultimately, higher borrowing costs on such things as mortgages and corporate loans would slow the economy as consumer spending and business investment wane.

Joe Biden on Wednesday issued an order to halt the deportation of Palestinians from the U.S. for 18 months.
It comes as Democrats and pro-Palestinian groups pressure the Biden administration to turn on Israel and stop providing it with weapons and other military assistance.

The White House “Memorandum on the Deferred Enforced Departure for Certain Palestinians” provides the grounds for the temporary halt on deportations. Biden also issued a “deferred enforced departure” for residents of Hong Kong in 2021, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas is taking a long-term approach to controlling illegal immigration at the southern border.
They are making it hard on Abbott for a reason, and, in turn, on the state law enforcement and Texas National Guard, which he had to deploy to take charge of the situation. Abbott is fighting a two-front war, at the border and in Washington, D.C., and he has decided to officially set up shop to make it more comfortable for the soldiers forced to be on the front lines.
That shop is a new 80-acre base in Eagle Pass, Texas. According to The Texas Tribune, the base will shelter up to 2,300 National Guard who have been deployed to the illegal-immigration hot spot.
The base will house 1,800 to 2,300 soldiers at one time. These men and women will no longer live in make-shift living quarters, which undoubtedly impacts effectiveness and morale.
Currently, the Tribune reported, they are living in tents, hotels and private residences. Others are traveling well over an hour to where they are stationed. The pressure and inconvenience require an alternate solution to be put into place.
Abbott acknowledged that the lodgings were atypical for routine military operations, but for Operation Lone Star, the soldiers needed more.
Doing so will give troops and command the ability to be present on-site in large numbers, something that would remain a logistical challenge if there were no facility there.
The installation of this new base will be a big advantage for Texas soldiers.
