Foreign Investors Loaded Up on Treasury Securities in March Despite all the Turmoil in the Media 

  • And in April, their purchases of long-term securities at Treasury auctions increased. 
  • Buying US Treasury securities was all the rage among foreign investors in March, despite whatever turmoil there was in the media. All foreign investors combined, from central banks to private investors, increased their holdings of Treasury securities by $233 billion in March from February, and by $942 billion over the past 12 months, to a record $9.05 trillion (red in the chart).
  • The majority of what they bought were long-term Treasury securities, which increased by $133 billion to a record $7.63 trillion, according to data by the Treasury Department Friday afternoon (blue in the chart).
  • The buying was across the major holders, except for China and Hong Kong combined, and for Ireland. Of particular note: Canada’s holdings of Treasury securities spiked majestically in February and March, despite the tariffs and the ultra-sour mood in Canada about US-anything.

    Moody’s downgrade of US rating may not dent stock markets much: Analysts

  • Global financial markets may not react much to Moody’s Ratings downgrade of United States’ rating from AAA to Aa1, believe analysts, except for a knee-jerk reaction, if any. At the domestic level, Indian stock markets would be focussed more developments such as progress of monsoon, corporate results and economic data. Talks on tariff-related issues with the US will also impact sentiment.

  • Moody’s downgrade, they said, was more to get the rating in sync with Fitch and S&P, who have already downgraded US’ ratings. While Fitch had downgraded the rating to AA+ from AAA in August 2023, S&P had lowered US’ rating back in August 2011.

    The ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ will bring big benefits for blue-collar workers

  • As it is currently structured, the bill would eliminate federal income taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security. It would also make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, increase the standard deduction and Child Tax Credit, expand health savings accounts and 529 education savings accounts, enlarge small business tax credits, increase Opportunity Zones, and allow 100 percent expensing for new factories, improvements to existing factories, and other production facilities.
  • Despite all these provisions that will particularly boost workers’ take-home pay and create new good-paying manufacturing jobs, almost every Democrat on Capitol Hill continues to portray the bill as nothing more than a tax cut for the rich.
  • “The overwhelming majority of the benefits will go to the wealthiest 1%,” claims House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
  • Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the bill includes more “tax cuts for billionaires paid for on the backs of working and middle-class Americans.”
  • This is verifiably false. As The Heartland Institute has noted in two policy studies, IRS data show that the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act disproportionately benefited working- and middle-class Americans, not the ultra-wealthy.
  • Consider. In terms of the percentage saved per filer, the IRS data show that filers on the lower end of the income spectrum received far larger reductions compared to those on the higher end. For example, if you earned $45,000 in 2022, under the TCJA, you received a 19 percent reduction in taxes compared to 2017. If you earned $5 million, you saved 2.3 percent.
  • In other words, the TCJA gave all Americans a tax rate cut; however, the rate cuts were substantially larger for the lower-income brackets. By designing the law to mostly benefit middle- and lower-income earners, the TCJA resulted in the rich paying a larger share of the overall tax burden.
  • This is an indisputable and vital point. It also obliterates the Left’s talking point that the TCJA was a big tax cut for the rich.
  • According to the IRS data, “every income bracket earning less than $200,000 [in 2022] paid a smaller share of the overall tax burden than they did in 2017.” On the other hand, “every income bracket above $200,000 paid a greater share of the total income tax burden.”
  • The big, beautiful bill simply extends the 2017 TCJA tax rate cuts while further reducing income taxes for millions of wage earners who rely on tips and overtime. The last time I checked, most billionaires are not compensated via tips and overtime.

    AOC’s NYC District Sees 70 Percent Surge in Major Crime Since She Took Office in 2019

  • Major crime has skyrocketed by 70 percent in the congressional district represented by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez since she assumed office in 2019.
  • According to an analysis from The New York Post, this rise is more than twice the overall increase across New York City, which stood at 30 percent during the same time period.
  • The report highlights that the 110th Precinct in Queens, which includes parts of Roosevelt Avenue notorious for prostitution and human trafficking, experienced a staggering 105 percent rise in major crimes, the largest uptick of any precinct citywide since 2019.
  • The report further notes that each of the four remaining precincts within Ocasio-Cortez’s district, which spans parts of Queens and the Bronx, also recorded crime increases that exceeded the citywide average.

  • Each of the candidates was promised the traditional indulgences for toeing the party line, and the rest is history.  Joe Biden wandered around doing what everyone told him to do, which was mostly stay in his basement and let the club work on his behalf, until the club delivered the nomination.
  • Inside that process, the strategic map was modified to ensure Ketanji Brown-Jackson would advance to the Supreme Court.
  • With Biden installed, he would select Merrick Garland as his Attorney General.  Judge Garland was an important judge on the important DC Circuit Court.  Garland’s replacement would need to be a Senate confirmed seat for that Circuit Court assignment.     DOJ Confirms Plan to Make It Easier to Prosecute Corrupt Members of Congress

  • The Department of Justice has confirmed a plan that will make it easier to prosecute corrupt politicians.
  • Under plans currently being drawn up, the DOJ would be able indict members of Congress without approval from lawyers from its Public Integrity Section, known as PIN.
  • The plans were first reported by The Washington Post and confirmed by a DOJ official.

    • The Post explains:

    Under the proposal, investigators and prosecutors would also not be required to consult with the section’s attorneys during key steps of probes into public officials, altering a long-standing provision in the Justice Department’s manual that outlines how investigations of elected officials should be conducted.
    If adopted, the changes would remove a layer of review intended to ensure that cases against public officials are legally sound and not politically motivated.
