Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was hospitalized Wednesday morning after becoming lightheaded at the gym.

The New York Democrat was treated for dehydration before returning to the Capitol.

Schumer’s hospitalization comes as Senate Democrats are facing critical fights on Capitol Hill this week.

Schumer’s caucus this week is trying to tear down as much of the GOP’s mega tax and spending cut bill as possible.

Schumer and other Democratic leaders are in a high-profile confrontation with the White House over intelligence sharing regarding the U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Washington, D.C. is currently being battered by a heat wave. The city is under an extreme heat alert on Wednesday, with the heat index expected to be well over 100 degrees.

CBS News reports:

The New York Democrat, 74, was at the Senate gym in Washington while an extreme heat advisory was in effect.

“Leader Schumer was at the Senate gym this morning and got lightheaded,” a Schumer spokesperson said. “Out of an abundance of caution, he went to the hospital to be treated for dehydration and is now back at work in the Capitol.”

The spokesperson added that Schumer “wants to remind everyone to drink some water and stay out of the heat.”
