Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) hasn’t been making as many media appearances since he was ejected from the leadership position amid an uprising of the GOP’s pro-MAGA wing.
Since he has a fairly intimate knowledge of the repercussions of going up against President Donald Trump’s millions of supporters, it was particularly notable that he emerged from his political exile to discuss how the president’s second term is taking a devastating toll on the Democratic Party.
As The Hill reported:
“It is a huge mess,” McCarthy said of the present state of the Democratic Party in a conversation with radio host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable” Sunday on WABC 770 AM. “It wasn’t just that President Trump won the election. He has now broken the Democratic Party,” he said.
“If you think about it, they are leaderless. There’s no message, and their polling continues to drop. They are now fighting among themselves,” he continued.
McCarthy added that House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are displaying “weak leadership.”
The former speaker went on to say that Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who recently addressed a joint rally in Las Vegas, are currently leading the party.
“The real leaders of the Democratic Party right now are AOC and Bernie Sanders. Those are the two that are getting the crowds,” he said.
Democratic Party infighting has been a common topic of social media discussion in recent weeks as warring factions clash over the best way to thwart Trump’s agenda.
I was asked about how the Democratic Party can avoid their own Tea Party-style revolt.
My answer? Too late.

The relative popularity of Trump’s policies only further illustrate how out of touch and dysfunctional the modern Democratic Party has become:

Just days after the election, The Guardian posted an article about a civil war that seemed to be brewing within the Democratic Party:
The bleak outcome has left Democrats bereft, unmoored and furious when they previously thought this week would be the cause of joy and celebration. They are now heading into a brutal political wilderness with its current leaders tarnished by advanced age and a catastrophic defeat and a younger generation that is yet to fully emerge.
The party also faces a likely brutal civil war between its leftists and centrists over the best way forward – one that will be fought over the levers of power in the party at every level from the grassroots of all 50 US states to the crowded corridors of Congress in Washington.
The stark reality has left Democrats asking themselves the same question over and over again: how did we get here?
The hypotheses and accusations rose from whispers to shouts starting on Wednesday. Although a handful of Democrats suggested Harris should have done more to distance herself from Biden, few party members appeared to blame the nominee, who was credited with running the best possible campaign given her roughly 100-day window to close a considerable gap with Trump.
Another former Republican House Speaker, Newt Gingrich of Georgia, also weighed in on the topic earlier this year:
