Listeria Outbreak Linked To Plant-Based Milk Brands Reportedly Kills Two Individuals, Products Recalled

Two people in Canada reportedly died of listeria infections after consuming plant-based milk alternatives.

“The implicated products, Silk brand and Great Value brand plant-based milk, have been recalled,” Food Safety News reports.

The Canadian Health Department issued a public health notice about the risks of consuming the “plant-based refrigerated beverages.”

Per Food Safety News:

As of July 18, the outbreak included 12 patients, nine of whom have been hospitalized. Two of the patients have died. The patients are between 37 and 89 years old.

The sick people live in the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, according to the Canada Public Health. The two deaths were reported in Ontario.

The patients became ill between August 2023 and July 2024. The investigation is ongoing and the outbreak is considered ongoing. Many of the ill people reported drinking the recalled plant-based beverages before becoming sick.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency first reported on the infections on July 9. It can take up to 70 days for symptoms of Listeria infection to develop, so additional patients could be identified.

On July 8 the agency posted a recall notice for the implicated products.

“Do not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute various recalled plant-based refrigerated beverages,” the Public Health Agency of Canada said.

“This outbreak investigation is ongoing. The public health notice will be updated as the investigation evolves,” it added.

“I strongly advise the public, especially those at high risk for listeriosis, such as the elderly, pregnant women and those with weak immune systems, to make sure they do not consume these recalled products,” said Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health, according to Food Safety News.

CBS News reports:

The agency said 10 more individuals – eight in Ontario and one each in Quebec and Nova Scotia — had fallen ill and were admitted to hospitals between August 2023 and this month in cases possibly linked to the products. Almost 60% of the people with the listeria infections were over the age of 60, the ministry said.

“Many people who became sick reported drinking recalled plant-based beverages before their illnesses occurred,” the Public Health Agency of Canada said.

The French food giant Danone, which owns the Silk brand, said on its website that the recalled drinks were made in a third-party manufacturing facility. It said the factory was closed for all operations while work continued to confirm the origin of the listeria infections.

“Although the investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause, we have acted quickly, preventatively recalling all Silk refrigerated beverage products produced in this third-party manufacturing facility,” Silk Canada said on its website. “We will not resume operations there until the investigation has been completed and we are satisfied with the resolution.”

“The news in this notice is devastating and our most sincere sympathies go out to the families and loved ones during this difficult time,” Danone Canada president Frédéric Guichard said in a statement, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Walmart Canada listed the recall notice, which includes three of the company’s Great Value brand products sold in the country, on its website.
