“Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for President is official, personal and political,” Pelosi said in a statement.

“Politically, make no mistake: Kamala Harris as a woman in politics is brilliantly astute – and I have full confidence that she will lead us to victory in November,” she added.

From The Hill:

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is officially backing Vice President Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee, an endorsement that came one day after President Biden announced he would no longer seek reelection.

The endorsement from Pelosi — who remains a towering figure in the party — is significant, since the California Democrat played a key role in pressuring Biden behind the scenes to rethink his decision to remain in the race. Pelosi held back her support immediately after Biden stepped down and offered Harris his backing, but offered a full-throated endorsement Monday.

“Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” Pelosi said in a statement.

“President Joe Biden is a patriotic American who has always put our country first. His legacy of vision, values and leadership make him one of the most consequential Presidents in American history. With love and gratitude to President Biden for always believing in the promise of America and giving people the opportunity to reach their fulfillment. God blessed America with Joe Biden’s greatness and goodness,” Pelosi said after Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection.

Per Axios:

Pelosi was a leading figure in efforts to get Biden to exit the 2024 race, with Biden-skeptic lawmakers looking to her as their best instrument for forcing the 81-year-old president off the ticket.

Pelosi never joined public calls for Biden to withdraw, but privately she warned him that he could hurt Democrats further down the ballot.

Pelosi and other leading Democrats, including former President Obama and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), held off on endorsing Harris immediately after Biden dropped out on Sunday.

But sources told Axios that, at least in the case of congressional Democratic leaders, that was out of deference to the process than hesitance to support Harris.

“For some of the top leaders, they are allowing a little bit of time before making any announcements,” one senior House Democrat told Axios on Sunday morning.
