[WATCH] “You Should Resign,” Democrat Congressman Tells Secret Service Director

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle grilled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) bluntly said Cheatle “should resign.”

“Do you really genuinely in your heart believe that you being in this role is what’s right for America at this moment?” Khanna asked.

“Do you really believe that the majority of this country has confidence in you right now?” he questioned.

“I believe that the country deserves answers, and I am committed to finding those answers and providing those answers,” Cheatle responded.

“I believe, Director Cheatle, that you should resign. I think there are colleagues on both sides of the aisle who believe that, and I hope you’ll consider it,” Khanna said.

“I just don’t think this is partisan. If you have an assassination attempt on a president, a former president, or a candidate, you need to resign,” Khanna said, according to The Hill.

The Hill reports:

During their exchange, Khanna pointed to former Secret Service director Stuart Knight, who helmed the agency when former President Reagan also faced an assassination attempt.

Knight was not forced out of his role at the time, but he did end up resigning eight months later.

Khanna, however, pointed to Knight in suggesting Cheatle step aside.

The California Democrat’s call for her resignation comes after Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) was the first in the party to say Cheatle should step aside.

“I’m very sorry to reach this conclusion: I have no confidence in the leadership of the United States Secret Service. I hereby call on Kimberly Cheatle to resign,” Boyle said.

Per Fox News:

President Reagan was shot in March 1981, and Knight resigned on Nov. 30, though his resignation was announced months ahead of time.

Khanna is among several lawmakers who have called on Cheatle to resign. She has so far refused. Cheatle nevertheless admitted the agency "failed" in her opening statement on Monday.

"The Secret Service's solemn mission is to protect our nation's leaders. On July 13, we failed," Cheatle said in her opening statement. "As director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse of our agency. We are fully cooperating with ongoing investigations. We must learn what happened, and I will move heaven and earth to ensure that an incident like July 13th does not happen again."
