While his trade policy is drawing opposition from various segments of the population for now, President Donald Trump continues to assure Americans that imposing reciprocal tariffs is the path to restoring the nation’s prosperity.
As he asserted in remarks this week, those tariffs will help pave the way for a resounding Republican victory in next year’s midterm elections.
According to The Hill:
“We’re going to win the midterm elections and we’re going to have a tremendous, thundering landslide. I really believe that,” Trump said, speaking at the National Republican Congressional Committee fundraising dinner.
“It’s so important that we pass the big, beautiful bill,” he continued. “And I really think we’re helped a lot by the tariff situation that’s going on, which is a good situation,” “It’s going to be legendary, you watch.”
Trump’s comments came after he dug in on the matter, and markets erased their small gains, as seen on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, the president announced an additional 50 percent tariff on top of the 54 percent rate he announced for China last week. The addition brings the tariff set to hit at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday to 104 percent.
Trump’s comments at the event sparked significant social media coverage:

“I had somebody say the most successful first month… now they said the most successful 100 days in the history of our country, and I believe that’s right, and we’re going to continue that way.”

Trump also used the opportunity to bring attention to his support among GOP lawmakers, as Fox News reported:
“You know, we’ve done very well in this room before,” Trump told attendees at the annual dinner Tuesday night. “But right now we broke every record. I just heard from Mike Johnson, he said, ‘We broke every record, sir.’ There is over $35 million. That’s not bad, for an evening.”
The fundraising numbers achieved during Tuesday night’s dinner rival what the NRCC has garnered across entire quarters. In July, the group highlighted a “record-shattering” fundraising haul for the second quarter of 2024, which was only $2 million more than what the NRCC was able to garner Tuesday night.
