[WATCH] Ronna McDaniel Dismissed Effort To Change Nebraska’s Electoral College Vote To ‘Winner-Take-All’, State’s GOP Chair Says

Nebraska GOP Chairman Eric Underwood said former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel dismissed an effort to change the state's Electoral College vote to a 'winner-take-all' system, saying it wasn't important.

Underwood made the claim on the “Charlie Kirk Show.”

“I had a meeting with Ronna McDaniel and said I think this is something that's going to happen. I think this is something that can happen, but I need outside help. And I was basically told that it wasn't much of an importance,” Underwood said.

“Under the prior RNC leadership who's gone, they said that another electoral vote for Republicans wasn't a big deal?” Kirk questioned.

“It was indicated that they couldn't do much from their level and they really couldn't support me more than, just, she might talk with one or two elected officials here and see if there's any interest in it,” Underwood explained.

The Post Millennial reports:

Under Nebraska's current laws, electoral college votes are divided up by Congressional district instead of the winner-take-all system used in most other states. This has, in the past, resulted in candidates who lose the state at large while still taking home electoral college votes.

Both Barack Obama and Joe Biden managed to get one electoral college vote out of Nebraska in 2008 and 2020, respectively.

In a post on X, Kirk laid out a hypothetical scenario in which Trump loses by exactly one vote, highlighting the fact that it would likely come from Nebraska. He then urged residents to call their legislators and “demand their state stop pointlessly giving strength to their political enemies.”

On Tuesday, Gov. Jim Pillen announced that he would support a winner-take-all system, and urged his Republican colleagues in the Legislature to pass a bill introduced by state Sen. Loren Lippincott that would do just that.

Nebraska lawmakers blocked an effort to change how the state allocates its Electoral College votes, despite pressure from Donald Trump and Republican Gov. Jim Pillen.

Nebraska Legislature Fails To Pass Measure Changing Electoral College Vote To 'Winner-Take-All' System

However, there's a push to bring the measure up for another vote before the legislative session ends later this month.

“Suppose Donald Trump flips Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada next fall, as current polls all show him doing. Would he win the presidency? Not quite. In fact, if Trump flips those three states and no others, he loses by exactly ONE electoral vote. Why? Nebraska,” Kirk said, explaining the aforementioned scenario.

“Despite being one of the most Republican states, Nebraska awards its electoral votes by Congressional district instead of winner-take-all. Thanks to this system, Omaha’s electoral vote leans blue: Obama won it in 2008, and Biden won it in 2020. He’s likely to win it again this year. California would never do this. New York would never do this. And as long as that’s the case, neither should we. This is completely fixable. Nebraska’s legislature can act to make sure their state’s electoral votes go towards electing the candidate the VAST majority of Nebraskans prefer. There’s already a bill ready to go – LB764. All Nebraska has to do is put it up for a vote. As I write this, the Nebraska legislature is still in session. Nebraskans should call their legislators and their governor to demand their state stop pointlessly giving strength to their political enemies,” he continued.
