White House Denounces ‘Deranged’ Lawmaker For ‘Dangerous Smears’ Against ICE Agents

The men and women responsible for enforcing the nation’s immigration laws have increasingly come under attack — both verbally and physically — as rioters have taken to the streets in opposition to the Trump administration’s border policies.

In some cases, even elected officials seem to be stoking the threats of violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), for example, compared these officers to a “terrorist force” and claimed they were acting in a “completely lawless” manner.

That type of rhetoric clearly rubbed Trump officials the wrong way.

As Fox News reported this week, Jayapal was on CNN when host Brianna Keilar asked her for her response to a scathing statement put out by a White House spokesperson:

In the statement, Jackson said, “Jayapal’s disgusting comments warrant an immediate apology. Heroic ICE officers are simply doing their jobs and enforcing federal immigration law, with the utmost professionalism.”

“Dangerous smears by deranged leftists like Jayapal radicalize their supporters to violently attack and obstruct federal law enforcement. Because of comments like Jayapal’s, assaults against ICE agents have increased by 500% this year. And that number will go even higher if Jayapal doesn’t stop with her smears,” Jackson added.

Jayapal responded, “What is deranged and cruel and outrageous is that, literally, we are seeing ICE agents, I assume they‘re ICE agents. They say they are. They don‘t have any identification. They‘re wearing masks. They‘re in plain clothes. They are coming and kidnapping and disappearing people on the streets of the United States.”

Of course, plenty of other Americans see the ICE agents as public servants tasked with undertaking a dangerous, often thankless job.

Jayapal’s comments have faced significant backlash on social media as a result:

Jayapal’s remarks came on the heels of a California elected official’s apparent call for local gangs to take on ICE agents, as CNN reported:

In a video post on social media that’s since been deleted, Cynthia Gonzalez, vice mayor of Cudahy, said, “I want to know where all the cholos are at in Los Angeles.”

“You guys are always tagging everything up, claiming hood, and now that your hood’s being invaded by the biggest gang there is, there ain’t a peep out of you,” Gonzalez said.

She further referenced “18th Street” and “Florence,” two infamous street gangs, and questioned why gang members were not protesting or speaking up about the immigration raids.

“We’re out there fighting our turf, protecting our turf, protecting our people and, like, where you at?” she said.

The video seemed to suggest Gonzalez was calling on gang leaders to “help out and organize” as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies participate in the Trump administration’s stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws.

Here’s some additional commentary about Jayapal’s controversial comments:
