Australian Olympic BMX champion robbed in Brussels en route to Paris

An Australian BMX Olympic champion, Logan Martin, had his van broken into and personal items such as his wallet and backpack stolen in Belgium on Wednesday on his way to Paris. The thieves also allegedly stole an entire stash of the athlete's candy bars.

Martin took videos after the incident showing the damage. "Our van got broken into last night, luckily my bikes weren't in there although my bike bags were in there, with some things in it," Martin said in a video posted on Wednesday. "It's a crazy start to the trip."

The video taken by Martin, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic park gold medalist, showed the passenger window of his van smashed out before cutting to footage of him and his crew finding their bike bags behind a park bench thanks to electronic tags.

The bags were opened and the contents of them had been strewn across the grass, including biking equipment and gloves. A bike helmet was atop the bench. Per Australian Broadcast Channel, "the thieves devoured his stash of chocolate bars, leaving the wrappers with the discarded equipment."

Martin posted a 2nd video in which he said "Luckily, most of our stuff was in our room and we managed to recover a lot of it, too, I lost my wallet, backpack and a few other things but overall it didn't end up being too bad. It's unfortunate when people feel the need to do things like this."
