Foreign policy expert and former adviser to former President Donald Trump, Walid Phares, suggested Wednesday that the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi could have been an inside job. 

"The reports that we are getting is that there is a clan that follows that head of the Islamic Republic who wants his son to replace him," Phares said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "Who blocked him? The president."

Earlier this week, Iranian President Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in the mountainous area near Iran’s border with Azerbaijan.

Officials early Monday declared that there were no signs of life at the crash site. His funeral procession began on Tuesday. 

"So there are these theories that this is an elimination of a blockage, which was the president," Phares explained. "That's why there are so many odd questions. That means that there will be a super concentration of power and of monetary power inside Iran in the next few months."

Iran set June 28 as the date for the next presidential election.
