Harris raises $200 million in first week of campaign

Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign brought in $200 million over the first week of its existence.

Harris became the apparent Democratic Party standard bearer after President Joe Biden last Sunday declined to seek reelection and endorsed her.

“The momentum and energy for Vice President Harris is real — and so are the fundamentals of this race: this election will be very close and decided by a small number of voters in just a few states,” wrote campaign Communications Director Michael Tyler, according to the Associated Press.

Roughly two in three donations, moreover, came from first-time contributors.

The haul is likely to help Harris contend with Trump's own surge in fundraising. His campaign the Republican National Committee collectively brought in $141 million in May.

The campaign announced that month that it raised $52.8 million within 24 hours of his guilty verdict in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's hush money case.
