Israel recovers bodies of two more hostages as Hamas attacks Gaza aid group

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday confirmed that it has recovered the bodies of two more hostages held by Hamas, the same day the terrorist organization allegedly attacked a Gaza aid group, killing at least five people.

The U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation announced the attack and fatalities in a statement reported by the Jewish News Syndicate, claiming that others were injured and staff were concerned that some of its team had been taken hostage.

The attack occurred when some of the local Palestinians who were volunteering with the aid organization were on their way to a distribution center west of Khan Younis.

“We condemn this heinous and deliberate attack in the strongest possible terms,” the foundation said. “These were aid workers. Humanitarians. Fathers, brothers, sons and friends, who were risking their lives every day to help others. Our hearts are broken and our thoughts and prayers are with every victim, every family and every person still unaccounted for."

The IDF said it has recovered the body of Yair Yaakov and another hostage in the Khan Younis region of the Gaza Strip. The identity of the other hostage has not been released because the family has not authorized it so far.

"The body of Yair Yaakov, as well as the body of another hostage, who were held hostage for 613 days in Gaza, have been recovered in a joint IDF and ISA military operation," the IDF said in a post on X. " Yair was brutally murdered by gunfire while heroically holding the door of the safe room in his home, trying to protect his family."

The Israeli military said Yaakov's children, Yagil and Or, were also kidnapped during the Oct. 7 attack in 2023, along with his partner, but they have all been safely returned to Israel.

Yaakov's return means that approximately 53 hostages remain with Hamas, with at least 20 still believed to be alive.
