Venezuela on Monday afternoon formally declared Nicolás Maduro the winner of the country's disputed presidential election.

The declaration came a day after the country’s political opposition and the entrenched incumbent both claimed victory in the contest, according to the Associated Press. 

The National Electoral Council in declaring Maduro’s victory handed him a third six-year term.

“We have never been moved by hatred," Maduro said in the nationally televised ceremony. "On the contrary, we have always been victims of the powerful. An attempt is being made to impose a coup d’état in Venezuela again of a fascist and counterrevolutionary nature.”
