Patty Morin, the mother of a Maryland woman murdered by a Salvadoran fugitive, says one of the state's two Democratic senators, Chris Van Hollan, never spoke directly to the killing – yet he went to El Salvador on Wednesday to show "solidarity” for a Salvadoran national in their home state who was recently deported to his native country.
"I'm very angry, I'm actually outraged, but I'm too sad at the moment to show anger at the same time," Morin said on the Fox News Channel on Tuesday night.
Her daughter, Rachel, was killed in 2023. On Monday, the Salvadoran fugitive, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, was convicted of murder for the crime.
Van Hollan posted an official statement on his congressional page. But Morin says he did not reach out to her.
Just the News called Van Hollen's Capitol Hill office late Wednesday afternoon requesting a response to Morin's claim. A staffer had not returned the call before this story was posted.
"He did not call our family. He did not give condolences," Morin continued. "None of the senators did anything to help search for the murderer of my daughter."
Van Hollen said in the statement: “While the conviction of Rachel Morin’s killer will not return Rachel to her family where she rightfully belongs, this verdict brings a measure of justice that they so deserve. I’m grateful to the law enforcement officers who brought her killer into custody and for our legal process for delivering this justice."
The government of El Salvador reportedly denied Van Hollan access to the country's prison system when he arrived Wednesday to try to visit Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran man who was deported from Maryland on March 15.
Van Hollan told CNN on Tuesday that he planned to go and "show solidarity” with Abrego Garcia.
Abrego Garcia is being held in a maximum security prison in El Salvador.
A federal judge and the Supreme Court have ordered the Trump administration to "facilitate" his release and return to the U.S. for deportation proceedings in court.
An immigration judge in 2019 granted Abrego Garcia a "withholding of removal" order amid concerns he could be killed if he was returned to El Salvador.
A Justice Department attorney said in a court filing that Abrego Garcia had been part of a mass deportation effort last month as a result of an "administrative error."
However, in recent days, Trump administration officials have denied he was mistakenly deported. And U.S. officials have alleged he is a member of the MS-13 gang, according to CNN.
Morin was raped and murdered in 2023 on a Harford County, Md., trail, according to evidence. Law enforcement connected Martinez-Hernandez to the crime after DNA evidence from Morin's body matched with DNA from an FBI database.
DNA evidence also connected Martinez-Hernandez with a March 2023 home invasion in Los Angeles. Martinez-Hernandez entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 after he was accused of the murder of a woman in El Salvador and a warrant for his arrest was issued. The judge in the murder trial does not appear to have set a sentencing date.
