Elon Musk Was Always Going To Take A Step Back From DOGE Role

His time as a ‘special government employee’ is winding down

Elon Musk has confirmed that he is indeed set to step back from his tenure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) by late May 2025.

The timing aligns with the end of his 130-day term as a special government employee (SGE), and this was always going to be the case.

Musk, appointed by President Trump to lead the cost-cutting initiative, has been instrumental in slashing federal spending, with DOGE reportedly saving $155 billion so far.

In a recent Fox News interview, Musk expressed confidence that DOGE would achieve its goal of reducing the federal deficit by $1 trillion within the 130-day timeframe.

“I think we will have accomplished most of the work required,” he told host Bret Baier, citing daily savings of $4 billion through eliminating waste and fraud.

Musk’s aggressive approach to downsizing government agencies, including cuts to Social Security and USAID, has sent leftists into meltdown over recent months.

Trump, while praising Musk’s contributions, hinted at his departure, noting, “He’s got a big company to run… At some point, he’s going to be going back.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously emphasized that Musk would step down only when his work at DOGE is complete, dismissing reports of an earlier exit as “fake news.”

As Musk prepares to return to his businesses, Vice President JD Vance confirmed he would remain an informal adviser to Trump.

With Tesla facing stock volatility and vandalism amid Musk’s government role, his focus may shift back to stabilizing his companies. DOGE’s future without Musk remains uncertain, but its mission to streamline government operations is slated to continue until July 2026.
