Trump Mulls $5,000 Baby Bonus To Boost U.S. Birth Rates
The Trump administration is considering a bold initiative to address the United States’ declining birth rates, including a proposed $5,000 “baby bonus” for new mothers, according to a recent report in The New York Times.
This proposal, still in early discussions, is part of a broader push to encourage marriage and childbirth, aligning with a conservative agenda to promote traditional family values and reverse a decades-long trend of falling fertility rates.
U.S. birth rates have been declining since 2007, reaching a record low of 54.5 births per 1,000 women aged 15–44 in 2023, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Advocates warn that a shrinking workforce could strain the economy and social safety nets as the population ages.
The administration’s pro-natalist efforts, backed by figures like Vice President JD Vance and Elon Musk, aim to spark a “baby boom.”
President Trump has embraced the idea, calling himself the “fertilization president” and advocating for policies to support larger families since at least 2023.
The $5,000 baby bonus, modeled after similar programs in countries like South Korea, would provide a one-time cash payment to mothers after delivery.
Other proposals include reserving 30 percent of Fulbright scholarships for married applicants or parents, funding menstrual cycle education to aid conception, and even awarding a “National Medal of Motherhood” for women with six or more children.
The administration is also preparing a report, due in May, to expand access to in vitro fertilization (IVF), though this has sparked debate among some conservatives who oppose IVF on religious grounds.
Others are suggesting that the baby bonus program should be limited to stable and intact families.

The #BabyBonus must be limited to intact families who are financially and morally equipped to raise children, and only to a number of live births they can realistically support.

Incentives without responsibility only worsen the problem. https://t.co/yQxKaEsmF9
I say this is a great idea. But you need to do a credit check and not have ever been on any government assistance in your life to qualify for the baby bonus. https://t.co/CRboRwHRav

No. Adopt policies that boost the value of the dollar and lower the cost of living, and you'll get that baby boom. This "baby bonus" was tried before with unmarried welfare mothers, and all we got was more unmarried welfare mothers and more children locked in the poverty cycle.

The only people incentivized to have another baby for $5k are the people we don't want to have more babies.
