A 85-year-old woman took action deemed “justifiable homicide” when she shot an armed intruder who had broken into her home and threatened her with repeated declarations of intent to kill.

Bingham County prosecutor Ryan Jolley described the event as “one of the most heroic acts of self-preservation.”

The mother of a disabled son in Idaho, Christine Jenneiahn, defended herself by fatally shooting 39-year-old Derek Condon, as outlined in an incident review published on Tuesday.

East Idaho News reports the confrontation unfolded around 2 a.m. on March 13, when Condon forcibly entered Jenneiahn's residence in Blackfoot, southeastern Idaho, while she was asleep.

Jolley wrote in his review of the incident that Condon, attired in a military jacket and black ski mask, menaced Jenneiahn with a gun and flashlight.

It was determined that there was a “strong likelihood” that Condon struck the elderly woman in the head while she was lying in her bed, as indicated by the presence of blood on her pillow and bedroom floor.

Condon subsequently handcuffed Jenneiahn and relocated her to the living room, according to the release on Facebook from Jolley.

Once the two were in the living room, according to Jolley's review, Condon secured Jenneiahn to a wooden chair with handcuffs and demanded information about the location of valuables within her residence.

When Jenneiahn informed Condon that she had few valuables, the intruder reportedly pressed the gun against her head. Eventually, Jenneiahn disclosed the presence of two safes downstairs, prompting Condon to leave her restrained in the living room while he searched multiple rooms on multiple occasions.

Condon discovered that Jenneiahn's disabled son was also present in the home during his search downstairs. This revelation reportedly incited Condon's anger towards Jenneiahn for not informing him of anyone else's presence in the house

“(Condon) also made numerous threats to Christine telling her that he would kill her,” Jolley stated in the incident review.

At a certain juncture while Condon was downstairs, Jenneiahn managed to move the chair she was handcuffed to back into her bedroom. There, she retrieved her .357 Magnum from underneath her pillow. Jenneiahn discreetly concealed the gun between the armrest and cushion of a nearby couch, positioning herself to observe Condon's actions.

Jolley highlighted Jenneiahn's uncertainty regarding the subsequent events. However, she did recollect Condon returning to the living room and issuing threats against her life as he continued his burglary.

Jenneiahn made a decisive choice in the midst of the tumult, viewing the moment as “now or never.” Drawing her revolver, she fired two shots at Condon. The intruder retaliated, returning fire and striking Jenneiahn multiple times in her abdomen, leg, arm, and chest.

“After returning fire, Condon proceeded into the kitchen where he succumbed to his wounds,” stated Jolley in the review.

Jenneiahn, still handcuffed, collapsed to the floor and remained there for approximately 10 hours. It wasn't until her son ventured upstairs the following morning and handed her the phone that Jenneiahn was able to call 911.

Deputies promptly arrived at the residence and commenced efforts to save Jenneiahn's life upon receiving the call.

Condon's possession included a lock pick set, car keys, a handcuff key, and various items from Jenneiahn's home.  Jolley's office asserted that Condon's death constituted a “justifiable homicide” under Idaho law.

Self-defense is clearly defined under Idaho Code section 19-202A, stipulating that “No person in this state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting himself,” USA reports. Furthermore, the law grants individuals the right to stand their ground and defend themselves or others using any necessary force and means.

East Idaho News reported that Jenneiahn was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. She has been released and is recovering.
