President Joe Biden has committed the government to cover the full cost of rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, following a devastating collision with a cargo ship early Tuesday morning.
Concerns about the economic implications of the bridge collapse surfaced Tuesday, with Breitbart News highlighting potential risks to the U.S. economy, including inflationary pressures, diminished productivity, and increased government deficits. The closure of the port could lead to supply chain disruptions, exacerbating inflationary concerns already plaguing the economy.
“It’s my intention that we will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge. I expect the Congress to support my effort,” Biden said Tuesday while addressing the media in a White House press conference.
He emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to seeing the project through to completion, reassuring the people of Baltimore of ongoing support until normalcy is restored.
Critics have blasted Biden over his decision to pay for the rebuild with taxpayer funds instead of investigating further before going to the ship's insurance company.
“It’s not just that it’s an election cycle, and he needs to look good on infrastructure, but because of all the thousands of Union jobs he directly gets to gloat about, further solidifying his Union worker voter block in time for the election,” documentary film producer Errol Webber lamented on X.
“You know rebuilding this bridge is about to take many years and cost many millions of dollars. That’s quite a lot of job security for those Union workers. Joe Biden is just blatantly buying Union votes with taxpayer dollars,” he added.
“The bridge is also critical for travel, not just for Baltimore but for the Northeast Corridor,” Biden emphasized, highlighting the daily influx of over 30,000 vehicles and its pivotal contribution to the region's economy.
His pledge came after discussions with Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive John A. Olszewski Jr., and the Maryland congressional delegation, during which he assured them of federal support in navigating the crisis and rebuilding efforts.
Biden reiterated his directive to prioritize the reopening of the port and the reconstruction of the bridge during the press conference, vowing to collaborate closely with Maryland officials and enlist congressional support to expedite the process.
Biden acknowledged the possibility of the ship's company bearing responsibility but emphasized the urgency of immediate action. “That could be, but we’re not going to wait if that happened. We’re going to pay for it to get the bridge rebuilt and open,” Biden affirmed, prioritizing swift resolution over prolonged litigation.
With the ongoing search-and-rescue efforts led by the U.S. Coast Guard taking precedence, Biden reiterated the government's commitment to providing all necessary resources to support Maryland's emergency response.
The cause of the crash remains uncertain. Video footage indicates that the ship lost power moments before the collision, implying a possible onboard power failure. The crew of 22, who were aboard during the incident, are currently undergoing questioning by the Coast Guard.
